Princess Diana and Prince Charles Did This 1 Thing Together The Day Their Divorce Was Finalized

Princess Diana and Prince Charles did not have an easy marriage. Though they seemed like the picture of royal perfection when they walked down the aisle in 1981 –the Prince and Princess of Wales were doomed from the start. Prince Charles was still in love with his ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles and Princess Diana –a former kindergarten teacher was young, naive, and still dealing with the effects of her unstable childhood.

The pair suffered through their crumbling marriage through the ’80s until knowledge of the prince’s affair with Parker Bowles became public, and they were allowed to separate in 1992 before officially divorcing in 1996.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana did this one thing together on the day their divorce was finalized

Though they had a very bitter fall out during their separation, by the time they were finally allowed to divorce four years later–the former royal couple had an amicable relationship. In the documentary, The Royal Family at War –royal expert Ingrid Seward revealed, “Diana did tell me something quite interesting. She said that on the day of the divorce, she and Charles sat down together on the sofa and they both cried. It was this crazy separation, but by the time the divorce was finalized, they were on much better terms.”

Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage ended officially on August 24, 1996– just one year before the princess’ tragic death.

Did Princess Diana know about Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles?

Princess Diana knew her husband was seeing Camilla Parker Bowles long before the public knew about the affair. In fact, she was always threatened by the Duchess of Cornwall’s presence. The Princess of Wales confronted the duchess at a party in 1989. She remembered, “I said, ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.”

Camilla then replied, “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?’” The princess said, “’I want my husband. I’m sorry I’m in the way … and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what’s going on. Don’t treat me like an idiot.’”

Why was Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage doomed from the beginning?

Unfortunately Princess Diana and Prince Charles were never compatiable –the simply did not view the world through the same lens and they were too different to settle into an amicable friendship. As Royal biographer Penny Junor describes it,

[Princess Diana] was just bitterly unhappy, she was disappointed in her marriage as was Charles it was a car crash from the very beginning. When Charles and Diana got together it seemed on paper that this was the most perfect match, but Diana’s childhood had been very difficult and the happy jolly-go-lucky venire that she presented to the world was nothing more than a venire. Charles was a very complex character and the two of them was about the worst match you could possibly have made.
