What You Need to Know About the Time Princess Diana Referred to Herself as a ‘Good Product’
Princess Diana knew that she was a big deal but she didn’t understand why. It took her a long time to accept that she was always going to be center stage and under constant media scrutiny. She thought it would all let up after the engagement and then the wedding to Prince Charles, but that didn’t happen either.
The media couldn’t get enough Diana
From the minute Diana was engaged to Prince Charles, whom she barely really knew at the time, the media was obsessed with all things Diana. What is Diana wearing? Where is she going? Who is she associating with? The media staked out her life including her friends and family as well.
Princess Diana learned early on that she was a hot commodity. Her face on the cover of a newspaper sold papers. Her life was turned into a soap opera and every little thing she did was scrutinized and picked apart. She had to learn quickly what to say and how to act.
‘A good product’
Diana took part in the famous Panorama Interview with the BBC’s Martin Bashir in which she was extremely candid about her time in the Royal Family. At first, she couldn’t comprehend the world’s obsession with her life. It never got any easier either.
“Well, it took a long time to understand why people were so interested in me, but I assumed it was because my husband had done a lot of wonderful work leading up to our marriage and our relationship,” Diana said. “But then I, during the years you see yourself as a good product that sits on a shelf and sells well, and people make a lot of money out of you.”
Princess Diana also addressed Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles
That’s not all Princess Diana spilled in the now-famous interview. She also made the infamous statement that will forever haunt Prince Charles and the Royal Family. She spoke about Charles’ blatant affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, saying that there were “three” when there should have been two in the marriage. “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Diana said.
Diana was reportedly happy to participate in the eye-opening interview
Penny Junor, a royal author, spoke with the International Business Times and said that Diana was “pleased” to tell her side of things. After the famous interview, the Queen wrote a letter to Princess Diana and Prince Charles telling them to divorce.
“She was very pleased with what she’d done at the time, she thought it was a great performance and she was thrilled,” Junor explained. “She rang up her friends and said ‘you must watch.’”
Who convinced Princess Diana to give the interview?
Simone Simmons, a close friend of Diana’s and a spiritual healer whom she regularly corresponded with, was interviewed for an Amazon Prime documentary called Diana: The Woman Inside. She says that Diana was urged on by Sarah Ferguson and another friend to participate in the interview. Princess Diana thought it would be about her immense charity work.
Simmons says that Princess Diana told her to watch the interview, to which Simmons said she’d made a “prat” of herself. Diana also revealed to her who encouraged her to take part in the interview conversation, Fergie and another friend.
Whatever the reasoning, Princess Diana revealed jaw-dropping details about the Royal Family in the famous interview. Her world would never be the same after it and she found herself in a divorce with Prince Charles not long after.
