Princess Diana Told George Michael This Personal Detail About the Royal Family and Her Divorce From Prince Charles
Prince Charles and Princess Diana wed in 1981 but after a fairy tale wedding, there was speculation from the press and members of the public that they were not living happily ever after.
This was confirmed when the pair separated in 1992 as was their infidelity which the Prince of Wales admitted to in 1994. Then the following year, the princess gave her bombshell Panorama interview and revealed to the world just how unhappy their marriage was. In 1996, they were much more quiet about their divorce proceedings than they had been about their marital issues. But Diana did confide in a few of her friends, including singer George Michael, about what was going on at that time.
Here are the personal details Diana told Michael about her divorce from the future king and his family.
What the princess told George Michael about her divorce
The Princess of Wales met the pop idol in 1989 and soon after they formed a friendship.
The Sun reported that when Diana and Charles decided to end their marriage, she confided in Michael. Their conversation was recorded by an answering machine in the singer’s house and prior to his death, the star gave the tape to his childhood friend Andros Georgiou as a “retirement present.”
When speaking to Michael on her birthday in 1996, she told him how “grim” the divorce was as well as what she thought of the royal family.
“It’s been pretty grim, but we’re near the end of it,” she said, before adding, “Not a very loving, compassionate family, this one I’m leaving.”
In the call, Michael asked about getting together to catch up but Diana explained she wanted to wait until everything was squared away.
The princess’ divorce was finalized in August 1996. She died one year later following a car crash in Paris.
Michael was found dead in his Oxfordshire home on Dec. 25, 2016. He had a heart condition and according to the coroner, his cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver.
Other stars Diana was friends with
In addition to the “Faith” singer, Princess Diana was also good friends with several other performers including Elton John, Bryan Adams, Liza Minnelli, and Michael Jackson.
The Princess of Wales met the “Thriller” artist during his Bad tour in 1988 when he was at Wembley Stadium and he became another one of her confidants.
After her death on Aug. 31, 1997, Jackson said Diana was “one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known because we could relate to each other. We shared something in common, with the press. I don’t think they hounded anyone more than her and myself. And we had a relationship, where we would call each other late at night… just cry on each other’s shoulders, how hard and difficult and how mean the tabloids can be.”
The King of Pop died on June 25, 2009.
