Why Princess Diana Was Scared of Losing Her Children
Princess Diana was terrified of losing her children. Her tumultuous marriage was leading down a path of separation and then divorce. She didn’t have a lot of options in a world she was thrust into. She loved her sons Prince William and Prince Harry more than anything. She wasn’t about to lose them, and so she stuck through with the marriage even longer than she should have. She also put off speaking to the public about how bad things were for a long time because of her fears.
Princess Diana didn’t want to lose her children
Diana was worried of losing her boys if she had a divorce with Prince Charles. Things were bad in their relationship even before they decided to tie the knot. Things got worse as it became apparent that Prince Charles was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles that wasn’t letting up. Princess Diana tried her best in the beginning, thinking things would eventually get better.
Diana wanted to speak up but was afraid of the repercussions
Throughout the numerous years of their marriage, Diana questioned leaving her husband. She was already dealing with things in unhealthy ways, including
Dr. James Colthurst, the secret go-between in the process of crafting Princess Diana’s biography, Diana: Her True Story written by Andrew Morton, spoke with People about Diana’s fears of losing her children. “She wanted to tell the world how ghastly things had been and how appalling,” Colthurst explained. “She was worried she would be blamed and then sidelined. And then would lose her position as mum.”
Prince Charles was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles
A huge problem within the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles was his continued affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. He even brought pictures of Camilla on his honeymoon with Diana. Charles also took the time to call Camilla while on his honeymoon as well as wear cufflinks she had gifted him. Princess Diana was very aware of what was going on and tried to speak to her husband about it on more than one occasion. The conversations usually ended in terrible fights and Charles continued his relationship with Camilla. Diana even tried to confront Camilla about what was going on which didn’t do anything to help matters.
Princess Diana eventually opened up to the world
Princess Diana eventually decided to come forward and tell the public what was really going on behind closed doors. She was the secret source for Morton’s novel about her life which pushed their marriage into the spotlight even more than it had already been. She was extremely unhappy and was struggling in her role with virtually no support from the Royal Family. Diana also participated in the BBC’s Panorama interview with Martin Bashir. In it, she was very candid about her life as the suffering spouse of Prince Charles.
The same year that her biography was released, Charles and Diana had their official separation. They would finally divorce in 1996, and Diana was free of her royal chains. Luckily, she didn’t lose her children like she had feared.
