Princess Diana Would Have Put Meghan Markle at ‘Ease’ and ‘Been a Good Guide for Her’

Prince Harry once remarked that his wife, Meghan Markle, and his late mother, Princess Diana, would have been close. One royal expert even believes that Diana could have provided some much-needed support to Markle as she navigates the life of a royal, putting her at “ease.”

‘Thick as thieves’

What would Princess Diana and Markle’s relationship be like? One can only guess how these two strong women would have gotten along if Diana was still alive, but Prince Harry has some insider knowledge in that area and knows the two would have been close.

During an interview with the BBC following his engagement to Markle, Prince Harry shared that his then-girlfriend and his mom would be “thick as thieves, without question.”

He noted at the time: “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me. But then, as I said, [she] would’ve probably been best friends with Meghan.”

Prince Harry continued: “It is days like today when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news, but with the [engagement] ring and with everything else that’s going on, I’m sure she’s with us, jumping up and down somewhere else.”

Markle noted: “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Princess Diana’s stones] and obviously not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us. It’s incredibly special to be able to have this [ring].”

Princess Diana might have helped Markle

Markle’s transition to the royal family has been fairly smooth, but not without constant scrutiny over her every move. Princess Diana was no stranger to being under the microscope and one royal expert believes that Diana’s experience might have allowed her to be “a good guide” for the duchess.

Royal expert Dickie Arbiter, who served as the press secretary to Prince Charles and Princess Diana, shared that Meghan’s “dysfunctional past” might have given a poor initial impression to the royal family.

He told the Daily Mail: “Meghan has a past and a dysfunctional family. Meghan’s been married before and worked in a business that’s pretty fickle, so Diana would have put her at ease and told her not to take any notice, that she’d had the media all her life.”

Arbiter further noted that Princess Diana might have been a huge help to Markle adjusting to her new royal life, sharing that “Diana would have got on with Meghan. She knew the way the showbiz crowd worked and Meghan has come from that world.”

‘A sounding board’

Princess Diana might have provided some insight based on her own experience, as Arbiter shared that, for Markle, “It’s very difficult to shed 15 years of being in showbiz overnight,” adding, “It will happen in time and Diana would have been a good guide for her.”

He added: “I think if Diana had been around she might have been able to help Meghan in, not so much combating negative media, but being a sounding board. Meghan probably talks to her mother but Diana would have been that friendly face on this side of the Atlantic.”
