Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice Have Been Called ‘Cringeworthy,’ and Here’s Why

The royal baby is here, pushing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry even further into the spotlight. But we can’t forget that they’re not the only royal family members who fans have focused on over the years. Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew were known for their scandalous marriage in years past, and now their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, are occasionally center stage.

While the princesses, who are in line for the throne (though still are highly unlikely to ever see it), certainly have fans, it seems many think they’re actually quite cringe-inducing. Here’s what’s been said.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie swear that they had a ‘regular’ upbringing

They may hold the royal title of “Princess,” but Beatrice and Eugenie swear they’re as average as can be. They’re technically not working royals, meaning they don’t help to carry out engagements for the royal family (they still attend many big events, however). Instead, they’ve both opted to work in businesses apart from their family. As Eugenie shared with Vogue, “We want to show people who we are as working, young, royal women, but also not to be afraid of putting ourselves out there.”

The sisters also told Vogue that they’re “very real” despite what many may assume since they grew up with ultra-infamous parents. As Eugenie told the publication, “Nowadays, it’s so easy to recoil when you see a perfect image on Instagram — but it’s important that it’s real. We’re real.”

They’ve been criticized for taking many lavish vacations

Eugenie and Beatrice may take to the press to try and convince the outside world just how “real” they are, but it seems not everyone’s buying it. Insider notes the sisters are reportedly worth over $4 million, and while they insist they work in business and still have many average, everyday work duties, many aren’t so sure what their work actually involves. Beatrice, for example, reportedly works for American software company Afiniti, but she may work more as a brand ambassador than anything else.

We can’t forget about the lavish vacations Beatrice and Eugenie are known for taking, too. Insider reminds us Beatrice has been spotted partying with supermodel Karlie Kloss and singer Ellie Goulding — and that’s just one of many times the sisters have been called out for their frequent holidays. Fans on Reddit have also called the Princesses out for their vacationing. “Beatrice has apparently been on 18 holidays in the last 12 months, which hasn’t done much for her reputation either,” one Reddit user noted a few years back.

One royal editor insists that they’re ‘cringeworthy’

It’s not just eagle-eyed royals fans who’ve scratched their heads at the idea that Beatrice and Eugenie are just like the rest of us. The Daily Express notes after their Vogue interview, Russell Myers, the royal editor for The Daily Mirror, told the podcast Pod Save the Queen that he thinks Beatrice and Eugenie’s interview was “pretty cringeworthy in my opinion. The very fact that they are talking about the pressures of their personal lives, about being young independent woman while being members of the Royal Family – it’s just a bit too much to stomach for some people, myself included.”

Not only did Myers call out the princesses for acting like they’re “independent” despite their reliance on family wealth to get them by, but he also thinks that it’s “a tad ridiculous” that they called themselves “real.” As he said, “I just think, this just smacks of delusions of grandeur. If they want to be taken seriously talking about their charity work, which they do do, they’ve got to bring themselves back down to earth.” It doesn’t seem like Beatrice and Eugenie are going to be making any major lifestyle adjustments to fit in more with the regular crowd anytime soon, however.
