Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent admission that the pressures of the spotlight have become overwhelming left many wondering what Queen Elizabeth’s reaction has been. According to some royal sources, the queen is “disappointed” by their attitude.
Prince Harry and Markle opened up
Prince Harry and Markle shared their experiences in the recent documentary about their royal tour of Africa, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, with each painting a devastating picture of what they go through as members of the royal family.
When interviewer Tom Bradby asked Markle how she was coping with the media scrutiny, she admitted that was not okay, sharing, “Look, any woman — especially when they are pregnant — you’re really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging, and then when you have a newborn — you know?
“And especially as a woman, it’s a lot,” she added. “So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed it’s, well… and also, thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m OK. But it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
She called the last year “hard,” explaining, “I don’t think anybody could understand that, but in all fairness, I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand… but when I first met my now-husband my friends were really happy because I was so happy, but my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great but you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.’”
Prince Harry opened up about how difficult it has been to be constantly reminded of the loss of his mother, Princess Diana. He explained: “I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash it takes me straight back, so in that respect it’s the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best.”
The queen is reportedly “disappointed”
Daily Express royal reporter Richard Palmer believes that the queen and other members of the royal family are concerned about Prince Harry and Markle’s mental health. According to Palmer, the queen is also “disappointed” by the Sussexes’ war against the media.
Palmer tweeted at the time Harry and Markle announced they were taking legal action against a tabloid: “Nobody in the Royal Family or the Royal Household is supporting Harry and Meghan at the moment. Even the couple’s aides seem embarrassed by their actions. William, who dropped his brother like a ton of hot bricks earlier this year, and Charles have distanced themselves.”
He added: “Obviously, if that changes it will be a story but at the moment the Sussexes appear out on a limb. Whatever the merits of their various legal actions, they didn’t inform their family that Harry was going to release that inflammatory statement.”
Palmer noted that “people with direct knowledge” had made him “confident that the Queen is unhappy about the behavior of the Sussexes over the past months.”
Palmer later remarked on Twitter: “This rather bald statement of the facts remains true 25 days later, as far as I can tell. While there is concern for Harry and Meghan’s mental health, their attitude has disappointed the Queen and other members of the Royal Family, according to several sources.”
