Prince Edward’s relationship with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip

For many years, Prince Edward wasn’t involved in the royal family’s responsibilities due to his career with the marines and in television production. However, following Prince Philip’s retirement, the Earl of Wessex began taking on royal duties full time, filling in for many of his father’s previous responsibilities.

However, Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s involvement in the royal family stems far beyond their royal engagements and family functions. In fact, many believe that Prince Edward is Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s favorite child (and that Sophie is Her Majesty’s closest confidant). Take a closer look at their relationship, below.

Prince Edward and Sophie spend almost every weekend with the queen and Prince Philip

Ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, Prince Edward opened up about just how close he and his parents are. Prince Edward and Sophie revealed to Sky News that they spend most weekends with Her Majesty.

Queen Elizabeth is very close with their children

Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex have two children together, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. And, according to their interview with Sky News, Her Majesty just adores her youngest grandchildren. With lots of weekends spent together, Queen Elizabeth is able to fulfill her royal duties while remaining close and involved in Louis and James’s lives.

Sophie is Queen Elizabeth’s closest confidant

Another key factor in Prince Edward’s relationship with his parents? They adore his wife, Sophie. In fact, some might say that the Countess of Wessex is Queen Elizabeth’s closest confidants. “She is trusted and relied on by the Queen in a way I couldn’t say applied to the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Cornwall,” a royal source told Daily Mail. “She is like another daughter to Her Majesty, they are that close. She talks to Sophie in the way she used to talk to Princess Margaret. Sophie has filled a terrible gap in the queen’s life that was left when her sister and the Queen Mother died in 2002,” they added.

Prince Edward will one day inherit his father’s title

The biggest clue that Prince Edward really is one of the favorites? His royal title. Unlike his brothers, Prince Edward did not receive a dukedom upon his marriage to Sophie. A big reason for this is because Her Majesty plans on granting him Prince Philip’s title, the Duke of Edinburgh when he passes. If Prince Edward does become the Duke of Edinburgh, Sophie will become the Duchess of Edinburgh, which was Queen Elizabeth’s official royal title before she ascended the throne.
