Revealed: This Was the Queen’s First Priority When Meeting Harry’s Now-Wife Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been married for just over a year. And when Meghan first met the family, it was likely a daunting experience, as anyone would expect. The royal family is unlike any other family in the world, and impressing them is probably difficult. But the queen revealed that she wasn’t necessarily worried about Meghan’s status or persona when she first met her — there was only one thing that mattered.

Meghan and Harry began dating in 2016

Harry and Meghan didn’t waste any time getting to know each other. The two were set up on a blind date (by someone whose name has ever actually been revealed), and they reportedly discussed seeing each other again only a few minutes into the first date. Since then, they’ve been inseparable — minus dealing with a long-distance, overseas relationship at first. After about a year and a half of dating, Harry was ready to pop the question, though some members of the family reportedly thought he was moving too quickly. However, he doesn’t seem to regret his decision; he and Meghan wed in May 2018 and welcomed their first child in May 2019.

The queen and Meghan reportedly got along well when they first met

When the queen first met her future granddaughter-in-law, the two reportedly got along well. They bonded over their love for dogs — the queen is a big fan of corgis, and Meghan has always liked animals. They also reportedly bonded over their like and dislike of certain foods. When Meghan and Harry got engaged, the queen must have liked Meghan quite a bit, because she invited Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, to tea with her and Prince Philip. And the queen has allowed Meghan to break royal protocol various times.

The queen was only concerned about whether Harry was ‘happy’

When the queen first met Meghan, she wasn’t concerned about her societal status. She didn’t care that Meghan was American, biracial, or that she had been divorced. All she cared about was whether Harry was happy. Harry had been through a lot growing up and never fully recovered from losing his mother. He didn’t meet someone while he was at college, and things with his former girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, didn’t work out. Plus, the queen likely saw what happens when you come between a couple (let’s not forget that she wouldn’t let Prince Charles marry Camilla at first). When it came to meeting Harry’s future wife, the only thing on her mind was how her grandson felt about her.

“I think the Queen very much wanted Harry to be happy; he’s suffered so much losing his mother,” Royal biographer Angela Levin told Express.

Despite breaking royal protocol, the two still have a good relationship

Meghan has come under fire many times for breaking royal protocol and doing things her way rather than the family’s way. However, the queen appears to still like her. The queen looked elated when she met baby Archie, Meghan and Harry’s first son. And she seems to have a lot of respect for Meghan and works to protect her from the criticism of the media and those outside of the family. Hopefully the two have a solid bond, because it looks like Meghan and Harry will be together for a very long time.
