Rachel Green Dating History: ‘Friends’ Characters She Dated on the Show

Friends was more than just a show about friendship. It was, in many ways, about dating in New York City. And, no one dated quite as much as Rachel Green. Despite her series-long connection with Ross Geller, Rachel got around. From her office assistant to her ex-fiancé, we take a look at Rachel Green’s dating history, below.

Rachel Green dating history

Joey might have talked about girls and dating a lot, but we never saw most of his girlfriends and hookups. Rachel, however, dated — and introduced new guys to her friends — a lot. Despite being Ross’ lobster and being on and off with him throughout the entire series, she dated her assistant, neighbor, and even a guy named Russ that looked identical to Ross. Here are all the guys Rachel dated on Friends.

We kick things off with Ross, Rachel’s series-long love interest and so-called “lobster” (according to Phoebe). Ross and Rachel are definite soulmates, but their relationship is messy and complicated. From their infamous break to the one-night stand that led to their daughter, Emma, the two went through a lot over the course of ten years.

In addition to Ross, Rachel had a couple of other significant relationships on the show — one of which was with Tag, her assistant at Ralph Lauren. He didn’t have any qualifying experience for the job, but Rachel hired him anyway because he was “so pretty.” At the time, Rachel didn’t think her attraction would be an issue, but the two ended up dating shortly after his start date.

Tag was younger than Rachel, and the couple ultimately wanted different things, so they parted ways. Shortly after their breakout, Rachel found out she was pregnant, and her friends suspected it was Tag, a red sweater that looked like his was left behind. In fact, Phoebe was convinced it was him until he showed up wearing the red sweater and Ross claimed the one that was left behind.

Joey had a lot of lady friends on the show, but his one significant relationship was with Rachel. Towards the end of the series, Joey developed feelings for his close friend — and best friend’s ex-girlfriend — and things got awkward. There was one incident where Joey accidentally proposed to Rachel (and she said yes) and another where they tried to make out on a couch but felt too weird about it. The two ultimately ended things and stayed good friends.

Who could forget Barry? We first learn of Barry in episode one after Rachel runs out on their wedding. She was marrying Barry for his financial security, not for love, and just couldn’t do it. It turned out, leaving Barry was the best thing that ever happened to her. After all, it led her to her best friends. Barry and Rachel had a couple of run-ins after she ran out on him, but they ultimately went their separate ways.

Joshua is another one of Rachel’s unforgettable boyfriends. And, get this: Jennifer Aniston dated him (Tate Donovan) in real life. However, they were not together at the time of filming. After the actors broke up, show products asked Donovan to play Rachel’s love interest on the show (awkward)! Joshua and Rachel met while she worked at Bloomingdales. She was a personal shopper and immediately infatuated with her handsome client. However, the timing wasn’t right for the two. Joshua was Rachel’s first boyfriend after Ross, and she ended up using him as a tool to get back at Ross. She even tried to propose to him after Ross and his new girlfriend, Emily got engaged. Needless to say, Rachel scared Joshua off after that.

Before dating Ross, Rachel dated Paolo. At the time, Ross had feelings for Rachel but was too afraid to tell her. So, he watched her get swept off her feet by the hunky Italian. Rachel and Paolo break up after Paolo tries to make a move on Phoebe.

When Ross started dating his student, Rachel started dating her dad, Paul. Things seemed to be going great for the couple until Rachel encourages him to open up about his emotions. It turned out, he had a lot to unpack, and it was too much for Rachel, so she broke things off with him.

Despite only a few appearances, Rachel’s high school boyfriend, Chip gets brought up a few times throughout the series. The most notable appearance was when Monica ran into him and agreed to go on a date with him. However, things go south after Monica discovers Rachel’s “cool guy” high school sweetheart was still stuck in high school.

Remember when Rachel introduces everyone to Russ, and they freak out because he looks just like Ross? After Ross returned home from China with his new girlfriend, Julie, Rachel took it upon herself to meet someone identical to her crush. That said, after Ross broke things off with Julie, Rachel ended things with Russ. Both were left broken-hearted but then found each other and fell in love. Russ and Julie forever!
