7 Reasons You Should Give Up On Ever Reading ‘Winds of Winter’

The final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones is coming in 2019, but we are still desperately awaiting the sixth installment of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga. At this point, the Game of Thrones series storyline has surpassed Martin’s novels and the highly anticipated sixth book, Winds of Winter.

The first book in A Song of Ice and Fire, A Game Of Thrones, was released way back in 1996 after Martin worked on it for five years. Highly detailed and stylized, the author drew inspiration from The Lord of the Rings writer J.R.R. Tolkien. However, unlike the man who wrote of hobbits and Middle Earth, we might not ever know how A Song of Ice and Fire ends.

Here are 7 reasons we should all give up on ever reading Winds of Winter. After all, winter is already here.

Other priorities

George R.R. Martin isn’t withholding Winds of Winter because he wants to. The acclaimed author is actually busy with other projects. He’s currently working with a variety of creators at HBO on a Game of Thrones prequel, and he’s set to publish volume one of Blood and Fire which explores the history of House Targaryen

Martin revealed on his blog, “Most of Fire and Blood consists of the sidebars I originally wrote for The World of Ice & Fire. Abridged versions of some of those pieces appeared as The Princess and The QueenThe Rogue Prince, and The Sons of the Dragon, but these are the full versions, together with some chapters that have never appeared anywhere.”

Feeling bamboozled

Those who understand the plight of writers ,and certainly those who have read Martin’s novels, see how much intricate work goes behind them and appreciate his pleas for patience.

However, many fans have had enough, especially since they waited seven years between the release of books four and five, A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons.

Next: A frustrating approach

A slow writing process

Every writer has their own process. After all, J.K. Rowling wrote the beginning of Harry Potter on some napkins in a coffee shop. Unfortunately, Martin’s approach when it comes to writing means his work churns out more slowly than some of his contemporaries.

He told The Guardian, “I can’t write more than one word at a time … I know my working methods, I don’t work when I travel, I don’t work in hotels, I don’t work on airplanes, I don’t work on trains, I work at home.”

Hard to follow

When A Dance With Dragons finally dropped in 2011, fans were eager to see what direction our beloved Westerosi citizens would go in. However, readers got a bit more than they bargained for. Instead of pressing forward with the storyline, Martin went off the rails a bit.

The book introduced an entirely new gang of characters (somewhat puzzling since it was already halfway through the series). In fact, the plot became so vast and unwieldy that many folks who had rocked with Martin from the beginning decided to move on.

Next: Finally, some closure

An unexpected ending

With Game of Thrones wrapping in 2019, fans who have been following Martin’s work will be getting an ending one way or another. It might not be the purist book ending that they’ve been waiting half their lives to read, but it should bring some closure none-the-less.

Also, Martin has never confirmed that Winds of Winter is the final book in the saga so A Song and Ice and Fire could continue into more books.

Moving on

With no Winds of Winter on the horizon and the Game of Thrones finale drawing near, it might feel difficult to move on from Westeros and our favorite players for the Iron Throne. However, there are new and exhilarating fantasy novelists popping up each day.

Game of Thrones is getting a prequel on HBO, and Amazon is reviving The Lord of the Rings into a television series. The fantasy genre doesn’t begin and end with Winds of Winter.

Next: Wishful thinking

Keep dreaming

Though Martin has promised Blood and Fire (which no one asked for), he hasn’t exactly ruled out Winds of Winter being published in 2018.

On his blog, he posted, “Whether Winds or the first volume of Fire and Blood will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018 … and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream.”

Unfortunately, Martin has made promises in the past that he’s been unable to keep, so letting go of any expectations that you may have might be for the best.
