12 Related Actors Who Have Worked Together
Hollywood is very much a family business for many stars. You would be surprised by how many actors are siblings. But the familial connections also include parents, cousins, aunts, and uncles, many of whom ended up working together on projects. This makes sense when casting for a star’s on-screen family member since they would look alike and can also use their own relationship to play the part. So which actors used these things to their advantage? Here are 12 related actors who have worked together.
1. Meryl Streep and Mamie Gummer in Ricki and the Flash
The movie follows a musician returning home and trying to make amends with her family. Meryl Streep is, of course, the star who plays the rock ‘n’ roll musician. Her daughter, Mamie Gummer plays her estranged daughter Julie on-screen. Of course Mamie was asked whether it was tough to work with her mother on the movie.
“I don’t know if I could have done it with anyone else,” she told the Telegraph. “It would have been very hard with a stranger to unleash that degree of emotion without worrying. But I know my mom is a professional and she knows me so well.”
The plot of the movie might be touchy for the two considering Meryl is one of the most accomplished actors in Hollywood. But it looks like Mamie has no resentments and is very inspired by her. “But I’m so grateful that my mom is fulfilled by what she does,” she continued. “I imagine it’s hard for women – and men – who have to give up what they love. I admire my parents enormously. They both do what they love and it makes them happy – and makes for a happy home.”
2. Meryl Streep and Grace Gummer in The Homesman
Hilary Swank plays Mary Bee Cuddy, an independent woman who takes on the task of transporting three woman who were driven mad to their homesman. Grace Gummer plays one of the mad women and Meryl Streep has the role of the homesman. Their time on-screen together is short, but it’s still pretty amazing to see.
3. Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie in Lookin’ to Get Out and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
The father and daughter have always had a troubled relationship. This is because Voight left their family when Jolie was less than a year old. They did however, reconnect when Angelina’s mother had ovarian cancer. They ended up working together in 2001 in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
According to Cinema, Jolie said she wanted to “reconnect with my father. My parents divorced when I was little and my Dad was never really absent in my life, but we didn’t spend all the time we could together. My Dad was very supportive, but there were still questions that I wanted to ask him. So this movie was great because it gave us quiet time to spend together.”
4. John and Joan Cusack in High Fidelity and more
The siblings are children of actor and filmmaker, Dick Cusack. They followed in his footsteps and have worked together a lot. John and Joan were in High Fidelity, Say Anything, Sixteen Candles, Broadcast News, Class, Martian Child, Grosse Pointe Blank, Grandview, U.S.A., and War, Inc.
5. Leslie Mann, Maude, and Iris Apatow in This Is 40
The comedy shows a married couple who are both about to turn 40 and are going through a tough financial time. They also have two children together. Leslie Mann plays the wife and mother. Her two actual children with director, Judd Apatow play her kids.
“It’s fun,” Mann told the Telegraph “they play versions of themselves but they’re not as crazy as that. Judd throws out areas they can fight about [on-screen] and they love it, they get it out of their systems.” Maude at the time was 14, and Iris was nine.
6. Martin and Charlie Sheen in Wall Street
Martin Sheen started acting back in 1956. Since then he has made many movies and has four children. Two of them became pretty big stars so it makes sense that he would eventually act with them. Wall Street shows a young stockbroker becoming greedier and dabbling in insider trading. Charlie Sheen is the star, but he gets to work with his father in the film. Martin plays his father who is also a union leader for maintenance workers.
7. Will and Jaden Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness and After Earth
The father and son duo started off on a good foot with The Pursuit of Happyness. Will Smith plays a struggling salesman who tries to take care of his son. Along the way, they become homeless. The movie is a tearjerker and Will was nominated for an Oscar.
Years later, the two worked together again in After Earth, which was notoriously bad. It was rated poorly partially because of the acting, but also because the sci-fi movie was full of bad ideas. Only time will tell if they will try to work together again.
8. Sofia Coppola and Talia Shire in The Godfather Part III
The third installment of the saga is notoriously the least liked. One of the common scapegoats is Sofia Coppola who plays Mary Corleone. She also happens to be the daughter of director Francis Ford Coppola. But that’s not the only family tie in this movie! Talia Shire who plays Connie is Sofia’s aunt and Francis’ sister.
9. Liza Minnelli and Judy Garland in In the Good Old Summertime
The musical shows two employees at a gift shop who bicker until they eventually fall in love. This movie is actually a remake starring Judy Garland. By the end of the film Garland is holding a baby which happens to be her real-life daughter, Liza Minnelli. Although Liza went on to act herself, the two never were on-screen together for a film again.
10. Woody and Brett Harrelson in People vs. Larry Flynt
The drama tells the real story of pornography publisher, Larry Flynt defending his work with free speech. Woody Harrelson plays the starring character while his brother, Brett plays the character’s brother, Jimmy. It was Brett’s third movie as an actor.
11. Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen in Badlands and more
The two brothers worked together on many movies. That includes Rated X, Men at Work, Young Guns, Badlands, and more. They have even continued to work together recently. Emilio appeared on Two and a Half Men in Season 6. So perhaps we will see more from them in the future.
12. Billie Lourd & Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: The Force Awakens
What do you do when you’re an actress and the daughter of Princess Leia? Well you try to get in Star Wars of course! Carrie Fisher’s daughter was able to be in the background of Star Wars: The Force Awakens wearing Leia’s iconic hairstyle. Billie Lourd’s character’s name is Lieutenant Connix and will appear more prominently in Star Wars: Episode VIII. This will be the next time we see the mother and daughter on screen.
