Are you gearing up to see that special someone for a first date after meeting on Tinder? If so, you’re likely looking for a few tips on how to make sure your meeting goes smoothly. And if you have a date coming up this weekend, you’re likely joining others who are going out on First Date Friday.

The Cheat Sheet chatted with Dr. Darcy Sterling, Tinder’s dating and relationships trend expert, to learn more about First Date Friday. She also filled us in on everything from how to soothe first date jitters to a list of do’s and don’ts for meeting your Tinder date for the first time. Here’s a peek into our conversation.

The Cheat Sheet: What is First Date Friday?

Darcy Sterling: The first Sunday of the year is a busy time for dating apps. The amount of people on Tinder significantly spikes, which means an increase in matches. On Dating Sunday in 2018, Tinder saw a 41% increase in global downloads, a 26% global increase in matches made, and a 27% global increase in conversations started. Matches then spend the next week getting to know each other, leading them to First Date Friday, when we predict many singles will be meeting in real life for their first date!

CS: What is the best way to get rid of first date jitters?

Hopefully all goes well and your date ends on a high note. |

DS: First, know that first date jitters are normal. The fact that you have them probably means you’ve got chemistry (at least on your end) with your Tinder match. To make sure your nerves don’t get in the way of enjoying the date, do something ahead of time that relaxes you. Listen to a great playlist or your favorite podcast the hour before your date. And know that no matter what happens, it’s a great learning experience.

CS: How can you stay safe on a first date?

DS: On a first date, I always say meet in a public spot where you’re comfortable. This can be a coffee shop where the barista knows your order or a workout class where your friend is the instructor. Make sure someone knows where you’re going, who you’re meeting, and what time you plan to meet up. Then text that person after the date to let them know you’re home.

CS: Could you share some of your do’s and don’ts for meeting a Tinder match for the first time?

Show off your personality! Let your Tinder match see you’re the same person you were in your initial messages. Dial up your curiosity by asking thoughtful questions to get to know your match. You can ask an unconventional question like, ‘What’s one thing on your bucket list that is a non-negotiable?’ The answer is going to tell you what areas of their life they value. Most importantly, this kind of question will confirm if their values align with yours.

  • Don’t do all the talking. If you’re a nervous talker or find yourself talking for most of the date, stop! Make sure you’re taking the time to get to know your match and actively listen to what they have to say.
  • Don’t make your match pull all the conversational weight. It can be exhausting to be the one carrying a conversation for two. If you’re more of an introvert, listen to what your match says and ask thought-provoking questions about what your date is saying to deepen the discussion.

CS: Anything to add?

Today, being single means embracing the adventure and new experiences that come along with it. Go out, meet new people, and enjoy the fun that happen while dating!
