This Is Reportedly What Harvey Weinstein’s Wife Georgina Chapman Knew About Him
In the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment and assault scandal, there have been a lot of questions about whether Weinstein’s wife was aware of his behavior. Now, a new report claims that Georgina Chapman was not aware of it, though she did know that Weinstein was sometimes verbally abusive.
People Magazine has a new cover story out this week all about Georgina Chapman, Harvey Weinstein’s wife of 10 years who announced she would be leaving him after he was accused of sexual harassment and assault by dozens of women. The magazine article quotes a source as saying that the relationship between the two started off “with the understanding that if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.” This refers to the fact that Weinstein helped promote Chapman’s fashion label while he was an influential Hollywood producer.
But the source goes on to say that Georgina Chapman had no clue that Harvey Weinstein was allegedly sexually harassing and assaulting dozens of actresses.
“She never would have stayed married if she’d known,” the source told People. “She was never with Harvey when he behaved like this.”
However, the source did say that she was aware of her husband’s “verbally rough behavior” and that in fact she was often apologizing for it.
Although Georgina Chapman apparently didn’t know that Weinstein was allegedly assaulting women, she was apparently aware of the fact that he slept with actresses. Actress Heather Graham said last week that during an encounter with Weinstein, he “mentioned that he had an agreement with his wife. He could sleep with whomever he wanted when he was out of town.”
Additionally, British tabloid The Sun claims that the marriage between Georgina Chapman and Harvey Weinstein was a “sexless business arrangement” and that she only stayed with him to promote her clothing label. Chapman is a fashion designer and the co-founder of the Marchesa brand, which celebrities often wear at red carpet events.
After The New York Times released its investigation alleging that Harvey Weinstein had been paying off women that he sexually harassed or assaulted for years, Weinstein said that his wife was supporting him.
“She stands 100 percent behind me,” Weinstein told The New York Post. “Georgina and I have talked about this at length. We went out with Lisa Bloom (Weinstein’s former advisor) last night when we knew the article was coming out. Georgina will be with Lisa and others kicking my ass to be a better human being and to apologize to people for my bad behavior, to say I’m sorry, and to absolutely mean it.”
But five days later, after the allegations continued to pile up, Chapman announced she was leaving her husband.
“My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions,” Chapman said in a statement. “I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.”
Harvey Weinstein and Georgina Chapman have two kids together, 7-year-old India Pearl and 4-year-old Dashiell Max Robert.
