Revealed: How Meghan Markle Keeps Her Head High and Defies Nasty Critics

Meghan Markle’s name is in the headlines almost everyday. Sometimes the coverage is positive, but more often than not, the press has critical and nasty towards her. Although it took some time, it seems that Markle has finally learned to deal with the constant press harassment, with a little help from those that love her.

Here’s how Markle is handling life as the most attacked royal in modern history.

Meghan Markle is constantly harassed by the press

Ever since Markle came on the scene as Harry’s girlfriend, the press has been over-eager to know every detail of her life, and over-critical of everything they see as un-British. Prince Harry became concerned about her safety when she was subjected to what he called “waves of abuse and harassment by the press.”

The harassment included members of the press trying to gain illegal entry into Markle’s home, and the bombardment of nearly every friend or ex-boyfriend by press members trying to obtain additional details about Markle’s life.

The abuse became so substantial that Prince Harry made an unprecedented move, and issued a statement to the press, asking them to pause and consider the impact their coverage was having on Markle’s life. The statement read in part:

“He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done. He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”

Unfortunately, the statement did little to slow the press and public interest in Markle’s royal life. New stories continued to run on a regular basis about the future Duchess.

How Meghan Markle keeps her head high

A year into her marriage with Harry, Markle seems to have come to terms with her treatment in the press, and has learned to live through it. Lately, it seems that she is able to handle the constant news stories and speculation with grace. A recent Vanity Fair article offered a clue into how she’s able to do this.

According to the report, her courtiers say she simply doesn’t read the news, and tries her best to ignore it. The story read in part, “Courtiers say the duchess has remained positive by not reading any press, good or bad, and by leaning on her husband, who is ‘100 percent devoted.'”

The fact that Harry was willing to break precedent and issue a statement to the press early in their relationship is a testament that he is, in fact, 100 percent devoted to her and her happiness. His support probably plays a huge role in her ability to be able to withstand the constant negative headlines.

Meghan Markle has lots of support

Markle is very lucky that she has the support of her husband, as previous royals haven’t always been so lucky. Princess Diana was also subjected to press harassment, although perhaps not to the extreme that Markle is. But Diana did not have the same type of support from her husband, Prince Charles, that Markle has from Harry.

Because of this lack of support, Diana suffered through a deep depression during her time with the royal family.

His mother’s experience may be part of the reason Harry is so willing to openly show his support of Markle. Harry is no doubt aware of how his mother was treated, and is probably desperate that the same thing is not repeated with Markle.

Friends of Markle have also been quick to defend her in the press, including Oprah Winfrey, Priyanka Chopra, and George Clooney. Although Markle has been attacked more than any other member of the royal family, she also seems to have more support than any member before her. For this, she is very lucky.
