As all royal fans are well aware, a few years before officially becoming the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will and Kate actually broke up for a little while. Eventually, things worked out for the best, and they were able to continue their real-life fairy tale. Yet, during their time apart, a hurt Kate didn’t hesitate to tell William exactly how she felt regarding the way he was acting, setting the stage for a major change in their relationship.

What led to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s break up?

By the year 2007, Prince William and Kate had been together for about four years. While many people may have assumed that they were completely committed by that point, that wasn’t necessarily the case. During the 2006-2007 holiday season, Parade reports that Kate’s family invited Will to stay with them at their countryside getaway, and he accepted the invitation. When the prince changed his mind at the last minute, Kate couldn’t hide her disappointment. After that, the couple began spending more and more time away from each other, and they began to drift apart, and after a few months, they had officially broken up

What did they do during their time apart?

It was William who ended things with Kate, and she was absolutely heartbroken. According to Harper’s Bazaar, he called Kate and explained he felt that the excessive and overwhelming media attention she was dealing with by being his girlfriend wasn’t fair. Kate admitted during the couple’s engagement interview she wasn’t happy, but that looking back on that time, she realizes it made her stronger.

The future duchess spent time with her mother, Carole, in Ireland, while William was obligated to fulfill his military duties. Although William and Kate were missing each other during this time apart, they needed the time and space to grow and learn before getting back together.

William didn’t sit home during the breakup

While it may be easy to imagine Prince William sat home feeling depressed while he and Kate were broken up, that isn’t what he did. Express reports the young prince spent his time partying at nightclubs around London, with quite a few different girls by his side. While Kate knew, even while they were together, that her high-profile boyfriend would always have women paying him a lot of attention, she was still negatively affected by William’s actions and didn’t hesitate to let him know.

How did William and Kate’s relationship change overnight?

Rather than ignoring William’s behavior, Kate decided to tell him exactly how she felt. She let Will know that he was “cheapening” her image by partying it up in public and that she wouldn’t tolerate being treated that way.

Luckily, Kate’s words really got through to William, and he was able to see things from her perspective. The couple ultimately realized that they didn’t want to be apart, and resumed their relationship, obviously stronger than they were before. Looks like William was able to realize just how special Kate was, and he hasn’t looked back since.
