Another high-profile couple made headlines recently for their breakup when The Real Housewives of New York City star Luann de Lesseps announced that she and businessman Tom D’Agostino Jr. are divorcing after just seven months of marriage.
De Lesseps wed her second husband in a lavish ceremony on Dec. 31, 2016, in Palm Beach, Florida, but rumors of infidelity plagued them even before they walked down the aisle. In July, the pair shot down reports that they were divorcing. However, less than a month later, de Lesseps tweeted that they had, in fact, made the decision to end their marriage.
Speculation began to swirl about why the two called it quits so the reality star decided to do a one-on-one sit down with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. That special aired on Sept. 6, 2017 and she discussed the real reason for the split — and apparently, it wasn’t because of D’Agostino’s indiscretions. Here’s a list of what occurred during their tumultuous relationship and what ultimately led to their breakup.
The infidelity allegations started before their marriage and continued after as de Lesseps’ RHONY castmates claimed that D’Agostino had been unfaithful to her. First, Bethenny Frankel alleged that D’Agostino kissed another woman outside of the Regency Hotel in New York the night before their engagement party. The Skinny Girl mogul backed up that claim by presenting de Lesseps with a picture of the incident.
Following Frankel’s claim at the end of the eighth season, Ramona Singer said that she received a text message from one of D’Agostino’s exes claiming that he allegedly tried to “stick his tongue down her throat.”
De Lesseps forgave D’Agostino for indiscretions
Despite the warnings from her fellow housewives, the countess forgave D’Agostino and had this to say after hearing about his indiscretion at the Regency: “I’m not going to let a stupid kiss ruin the rest of my life. He screwed up. What he did was wrong. But this wasn’t premeditated. It wasn’t an affair. It was a mistake. He was upset with me. It was a stupid retaliation of some sort. He did the wrong thing, and he totally recognizes that. I know in my heart of hearts that he loves me.”
D’Agostino compared marriage to ‘a dog with a collar’
D’Agostino was heard on camera comparing himself to a “dog with a collar” after his ex commented on his wedding ring.
De Lesseps and D’Agostino ran into a woman named Missy Tool, who happened to be one of the businessman’s former flames, at an event hosted at Singer’s apartment. When Tool joked with him about his wedding ring and no longer being a bachelor, D’Agostino made the comparison saying, “I’m getting used to it. It’s like a dog with a collar.”
The pair allegedly had a physical altercation
Reports surfaced in July 2017 that things between the pair got nasty and they engaged in a loud altercation that allegedly turned physical outside of a Manhattan eatery. During her sit down with Cohen, de Lesseps downplayed the incident and denied that she slapped D’Agostino in the face.
“I didn’t slap him,” she said. “What I did was grab his face. It was in the heat of the moment and I was hurt about something. I wanted his attention and I grabbed his face. It wasn’t really a slap.”
De Lesseps opened up about the ‘final straw’
De Lesseps also opened up to Cohen about a major factor that aided in the decision to end her marriage to D’Agostino.
“Tom went out and he called up an old girlfriend, and they went out with a group of people and I didn’t know about it,” she confessed. “I found out about it the next day in the press. So for me, that was, like, the final straw.”
The real reason they decided to end the marriage
The Countess revealed that the real reason for their breakup was not over her ex’s transgressions, but because they could not get along with each other.
“It was impossible, we were having problems and we tried really hard to fix things, and we finally came to the conclusion it was just not going to work,” she said. “It was a tough decision and we are both very sad about it. But the truth is we just weren’t getting along.”
As for all of the cheating allegations, de Lesseps told Page Six that she does not think D’Agostino was unfaithful after they tied the knot saying, “I do not think Tom cheated on me, definitely not. God knows he’s got himself in some trouble in the past, but I don’t believe that continued [while we were married].”
How de Lesseps is coping since the split announcement
Since announcing her split from D’Agostino, de Lesseps has been doing well and focusing on spending more time with her family. Just days after breaking the news, the reality star headed to Europe with her adult children, Victoria and Noel.
De Lesseps took to Instagram and shared some snaps of their vacation.
