‘RHONY:’ Luann de Lesseps Admits Remaining Sober This Season Was Difficult
During the second half of The Real Housewives of New York City reunion, the ladies slam Luann de Lesseps for not being serious about her sobriety.
In a clip shared during Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the women peck at de Lesseps’ rehab timeline. Plus, Ramona Singer implies de Lesseps wasn’t always sober after de Lesseps refers to her as “Miss Pinot Grigio.”
Singer shoots back, “I believe you are still drinking on the side.” Even though de Lesseps denies it, Singer hammers away at her, insisting she is sneaking drinks.
What was it like to stay sober this season?
Host Andy Cohen turns to de Lesseps after the clip is played. “One thing that might get overlooked is the pressure on you to have everyone drinking around you all the time,” he remarks. As he talks, de Lesseps nods and agrees.
Cohen adds the season had to be pretty strenuous too. “It was really tough,” she admits. “What people don’t realize is that it’s a lot of work. And it was really difficult to be sober around all that drinking.” She turns to co-guest Pauly D from Jersey Shore and asks him how’d he’d maintain being sober around all that drinking.
She adds that nobody gave her any credit for staying sober around the drinking either.
But she stumbled
As de Lesseps said during her WWHL appearance, remaining sober was extremely difficult. When Singer implied de Lesseps was drinking she may have been thinking of a recent incident where de Lesseps “admitted to drinking 2 glasses of mimosas after a performance she had in Chicago,” People reports.
As a result of the indiscretion, de Lesseps had to tighten her game. People reports she was “offered to immediately enroll in outpatient treatment and she declined due to her touring schedule,” according to court documents. Also, “The subject was also given the option to be fitted with an alcohol ankle monitoring device in which she declined stated that it is too intrusive.”
When the women accuse de Lesseps of not taking her sobriety seriously, they may be referring to missed AA meetings. She was supposed to attend a certain number of meetings, which she blew off, People reports. According to People, de Lesseps’ probation is scheduled to end on August 28.
Drinking is hard to avoid on reality television
During her appearance on WWHL, de Lesseps addressed her misstep. “I got stricter probation,” she said. “And I’ve paid very dearly this year for one big mistake. I’ll be glad to put it behind me and I feel like I really learned a lot about myself.”
She adds, “I look at it as kind of a blessing because, believe it or not, it really made me step back and take a look at my drinking etcetera and I feel fortunate.” While de Lesseps feels fortunate, remaining sober on a reality television show may not be easy, according to one RHONY alum.
Aviva Drescher told Page Six production kept the booze flowing during filming and encouraged drinking. “I told the head producer, ‘I don’t want to do a shot. Can you just fill it with water?’ ” she asserted. “And they said no.”
She added, “At times, the producers would say, ‘Well, we’re not going to pay for Mr. Chow to cater your party because that’s over budget. But you’ll never hear them say, ‘We won’t pay for alcohol.’ It’s always readily available.”
