‘RHONY’: Why Dorinda Medley Never Wants to Get Married Again

The women of The Real Housewives love to get married. It’s one of the best ways to get a spin-off special, after all. Truly, some of the women treat marriage like it’s dating.

Real Housewives of Orange County star Tamra Judge has been married three times. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills‘ Eileen Davidson was married three times, as was Real Housewives of Dallas‘ Cary Deuber.

But another marriage is not on the table for The Real Housewives of New York City star, Dorinda Medley. No matter how many spin-offs it might get her.

How does Medley feel about marriage?

Some of the housewives may want to walk down the aisle again, but Medley feels that that time has passed for her.

“Past a certain age, people should not be allowed to be married,” Medley said on a recent episode of RHONY. “It’s for the young! They have tolerance, they have dreams, they want babies. You get to my age and it’s just the opposite. I don’t even want a plant in my house!”

Though she is in a long-term relationship with boyfriend, John Mahdessian, she thinks that marriage would actually harm their relationship.

“If John and I lived together 24 hours, seven days a week, it would affect our relationship,” she added. “We’d have a 2,000-square-foot apartment for 12,000 square feet of personality. It just wouldn’t fit!”

Medley’s past relationships

Medley has been very secretive about her relationships in the past. According to her Bravo bio, she was married to a man for ten years and moved to London with him.

Her ex-husband must be a very private person because Medley never mentions him by name and neither does the Bravo website. While married to this man, she gave birth to her daughter Hannah and started her cashmere company, DCL Cashmere, that clothed stars like Princess Diana and Joan Collins.

After leaving London and moving back to the U.S., Medley met hedge fund advisor, Richard Medley. The two crossed paths when she was selling him some property in New York City.

The pair quickly fell in love and were married in 2005. Unfortunately, Richard fell ill and passed away in 2011.

Once he died, Medley turned to RHONY to find purpose.

“I think reality TV saved my life because after Richard died and Hannah went to college, I was lost. I lost all my identity — I was no longer a wife, a mother … I was like, ‘Really? This is what 50 looks like?'” she once told Page Six.

Now, Medley is dating Mahdessian, who is the president of Madame Paulette, a luxury dry cleaning store.

Why isn’t Mahdessian on ‘RHONY’?

Mahdessian used to be a regular guest on RHONY but Medley decided not to have him come on the show anymore.

“Listen, you learn a great lesson,” she told Entertainment Tonight of her decision. “I actually thought about it. I can’t think of any couple on the Housewives that it’s been successful for … If you look at the track record, it’s separating church and state a little bit. I think it’s healthy to be able to do this, go home and have somebody who’s not part of it.”

She also decided to keep her boyfriend off of the show in order to focus more on herself.

“You know what, he doesn’t need to be on,” she continued. “He doesn’t. Also, too, I felt like it was distracting from me, the audience getting to see me, and me getting to really get involved with the girls, because I felt like I was protecting and managing him.”
