Ricky Gervais Confirms Season 3 of ‘After Life’ Will Be the Last
Ricky Gervais charmed the TV audience with his Golden Globes monologue in January, and he’s done the same thing with his show, After Life. Gervais is known for creating The Office in Britain and producing its famous American counterpart, but this series is special too.
The comedian earned praise for his performance After Life, and it’s become one of Netflix’s top comedy series. Fans begged for more episodes, and they’re on the way.
What’s the gist of Ricky Gervais’ ‘After Life’?
Gervais plays Tony Johnson, a surly but depressed widower who lost his wife Lisa to cancer. He finds solace in the videos his wife secretly recorded for him, but they make him and the viewing audience either smile or cry. Tony’s closest friend is Brandy, his German shepherd, but his brother-in-law looks out for him too.
All of these things bring a bit of balance to his life, but Tony is constantly contemplating taking his own life and makes sure to tell everyone. That includes his co-workers and incompetent therapist.
During the series, Tony is reminded he used to be a nice person, but death and grief affected his attitude toward people and life.
He has angry outbursts, is prone to sarcasm, and has a hard time feeling happy. Children and adults can catch his verbal darts, as Tony doesn’t care about a filter. But that doesn’t mean he lacks empathy, wisdom, love, or humor. The same goes for the other characters in the series.
Season 3 of ‘After Life’ was up in the air
Season 2 received an overwhelmingly warm response from fans, and Gervais was touched by the outpouring of messages. He said people reached out to tell him the show helped them cope with death, loneliness, and grief.
While Gervais didn’t originally plan for a third season, this pushed him into considering another round of the dark comedy. Netflix made it happen.
He recently told Berkshire Life that after season 1 aired, his agent received hundreds of letters about the show.
But it was the emotional response. My agent got 300 letters and that never happens, no one writes letters anymore. People would come up to me on the street and it was always about their loss. They’d say “I lost my brother three weeks before I watched it,” or “I lost my wife two years ago and I was Tony, that was me, so thank you.”
Ricky Gervais confirmed season 3 will be the last
After Life is returning for season 3, but there will be no more installments after that. The good thing is that Brandy won’t be going anywhere.
Gervais told Berkshire Life “I’ve already made my mind up there won’t be a four. And you do put those things out there to make you remember as it’s tempting. Studios are tempted and the audience are tempted but there’s an old saying that ‘to lead the orchestra, you’ve got to turn your back on the audience’.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gervais signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to create more content, including scripted series and stand-up specials. Season 4 is out of the question, but this isn’t the last fans will hear from Gervais on the streamer. Watch After Life on Netflix now for a good laugh or cry.
