Rihanna Has Finally Responded to ‘Batman’ Casting Rumors
In early September, rumors began swirling that Rihanna could potentially play Poison Ivy in an upcoming Batman movie, set to hit theaters in 2021.
And while it initially seemed like a baseless theory to some, the rumor mill went into overdrive after the singer-turned-actress shared a social media post suggesting that there was some validity to the speculation. But maybe it’s not what it seemed, after all.
In a new interview, the “Needed Me” singer opened up about whether she’s in talks to play the Gotham botanist, and it sounds like it’s not happening.
More on the casting rumors
This all began with a post from We Got This Covered, which is an outlet that tends to release theories based on information from reliable sources. The outlet reported:
“Our sources have informed us…that one name Warner Bros. is looking at to take the role is pop star, Rihanna. From what we understand, the singer is just one of a few names on the studio’s internal wishlist and it’s unclear if a formal offer has been extended yet.”
The outlet said that it believes the rumors are true given that its sources accurately predicted that a Swamp Thing movie was in the works and that Wonder Woman would receive her Golden Eagle armor in the superhero’s next installment.
Rihanna sparks speculation
On Sept. 8, Rihanna posted an Instagram video of herself sporting a pair of leather, Batman-esque boots while riding in a car.
“Bat-mobile, but make it fashion!” read the post. “get into this matte leather-rubber fusion tho. @fenty”
It seemed like she had all but confirmed that the rumors were true, which had fans freaking out in her comments.
“CONFIRMED: Rihanna has been [cast] as poison ivy,” one woman wrote.
“People gon go crazy because you said Bat mobile and you’re rumored to be playing Poison Ivy. It’s me. I’m people,” added another.
And someone else asked, “Is this confirmation???”
Sorry — Rihanna said the post is not confirmation
When Entertainment Tonight asked about the possible “hinting” at her annual Diamond Ball on Sept. 12, Rihanna replied, “Wait did I hint anything?”
“Oh that [Instagram post]? Really? That!? Are you serious?” she asked. “No that has nothing to do with Poison Ivy.”
While she admitted that she loves Batman, she said she currently does not have plans to work on any future productions.
“That [post] has a lot to do with Batman [because] I have separate obsessions,” Rihanna continued. “I have a bigger obsession with Poison Ivy, I’m just being honest. And yeah, I dyed my hair red because of Uma Thurman in the original.”
She also said she’s not opposed to following in Thurman’s footsteps in the future.
“You know what, they didn’t call me yet. But if they did, I would love to go in and try out because Poison Ivy is one of my obsessions in life,” she added. “I did it for Halloween one year, I mean come on!”
Rihanna is focused on other things at the moment
The 31-year-old is currently balancing a lingerie line, a makeup company, and a luxury fashion brand. She’s also preparing to release her highly-anticipated ninth studio album later this year.
While many details aren’t yet available, it is known that the album will be a reggae album.
“Though it’s too soon to name a full list of collaborators, one early influence may be Supa Dups, the Jamaican-born record producer who has worked with such dancehall greats as Beenie Man, Sean Paul, and Elephant Man,” writer Chioma Nnandi said in Rihanna’s cover story for Vogue’s June 2018 issue.
It will be her first project since 2016’s Anti, and the delay has fans pretty anxious. But as we said, RiRi is a busy woman.
“I used to be in the studio, only the studio, for three months straight, and an album would come out,” she explained to Interview magazine in June. “Now, it’s like a carousel. I do fashion one day, lingerie the next, beauty the next, then music the next. It’s like having a bunch of kids and you need to take care of them all.”
Fair enough. Stay tuned for what she does next.
