Tom Petty died at age 66 after suffering cardiac arrest. As a rock music legend and icon, his passing was deeply saddening to fans and fellow musicians alike. Many celebrities spoke out via social media to offer their reflection on Petty’s life and music.

John Mayer isn’t a stranger to covering Tom Petty songs. One of his more famous covers was when he performed “Free Fallin’” at the Nokia Theatre.
He wrote this about the passing of Petty on Twitter: “I loved Tom Petty and I covered his songs because I wanted know what it felt like to fly. ‘you belong somewhere you feel free.’”

Sheryl Crow also felt affected by the passing of Petty. She wrote this on Twitter: “This is unbearable. Vegas and now a great music hero has passed. You brought us so much joy, @tompetty. We will miss you.”
She also paid tribute to him at the eighth annual espnW Women + Sports Summit.
3. Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney also spoke up, twice. First on Twitter, he wrote, “Sending love to Tom Petty and his family at this difficult time.”
And then again today he posted a picture of him and Petty. The caption read, “Dear Tom, so sad to hear of his passing. What a lovely, intelligent and talented man he was. Love to his family.”

Actor and filmmaker Kevin Smith wrote about listening to Petty’s music over and over again: “One night when I was 11, I played The Waiting by #TomPetty on a jukebox 100 times in a row. Loved the man’s voice & his art. RIP, Legend.”

Tommy’s passing feels like I’ve lost a little brother. Growing up together in Gainesville and seeing one of my students blossom as an incredibly gifted musician and songwriter has been one of my most fulfilling experiences in this life. It was obvious very early on in his career that his talent, magnetism and charisma were a very special gift that few souls in this world are given. He has given this world so many wonderful memories and touched millions with his magic. Gone far too soon. May he rest in peace knowing how much he is loved and appreciated by all of us that are left behind.
