There’s a new Star Wars trilogy coming to theaters

According to Time Magazine, The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson is set to write and direct another trilogy in the Star Wars universe. This will be a story completely separate from the Skywalker saga, and will presumably exclude characters like Han Solo, General Organa, and Luke Skywalker.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in a statement. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

It’s not exactly clear where in the Star Wars timeline these movies will belong, nor has Disney announced the cast list for this trilogy. However, the first movie of the series is set to premiere sometime in 2022.

“I’m just in the very beginning of starting to come up with what the new trilogy is going to be,” Johnson reportedly said at a The Last Jedi press event in Mexico during November 2017. “What makes me so excited about it, is the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world. There’s just so much potential and I can’t wait to jump into it.”

A prequel to ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ is also in the works

Fans met and lost characters like Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso fairly quickly. However, some report that there is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiering. Time reports that Disney described this story as a “spy thriller,” detailing the adventures of Cassian Andor and K-2SO.

According to Radio Times, this series will premiere exclusively on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+. However, there is no official premiere date for this project. Filming in London begins sometime during 2020.
