Will ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ be the last Star Wars movie?

It feels like a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away when Star Wars last released a movie. With The Rise of Skywalker right around the corner, fans are wondering what’s next for this franchise. For some, the future content comes to the comfort of their own homes, thanks to streaming services like Disney+.

One Forbes article states, “The theatrical industry has changed since 2012. Moviegoers spend a much larger percentage of their money on a much smaller pool of ‘big’ movies. Audiences who once went to the movies just to go to the movies now get much of their filmed entertainment on TV and streaming services. If anything, The Mandalorian… and the other in-development shows may suggest that the immediate future for Star Wars is not in theatrical but in episodic television content.”

An Obi-Wan Kenobi series, starring Ewan McGregor, is coming to Disney+

Aside from Disney+’s well-received series, The Mandalorian, there are other Star Wars-related television shows coming to their streaming platform. That includes an original series starring Ewan McGregor, detailing the beloved Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

According to Radio Times, “at Disney D23, LucasFilm’s Kathleen Kennedy announced all scripts are written and filming will begin in 2020.” Until then, episodes of The Mandalorian premiere on Disney+ on a weekly basis. For some fans, the success of recent releases is enough to kickstart another Lucasfilm project.

Some fans think there should be more Star Wars movies, released by Disney

There are a few Star Wars movies and television shows set to hit theaters and Disney’s streaming platform within the coming years. Still, some fans took to Twitter, sharing their love for this franchise and the characters in the Star Wars universe.

“My six-year-old, going to bed, after seeing Return of the Jedi: ‘They should make another Star Wars movie about the fun Ewoks.’ Disney+, get those Ewok adventures on tap,” said one Twitter user.

“I am actually nervous about the last Star Wars movie coming out in December because I don’t know what I’ll do with my life when it’s over. Like, I’ve planned my life until then. The last few years have been a countdown to Star Wars and that’s it,” wrote another Twitter user.

Reportedly, there are some Star Wars projects in the works by Disney and Lucasfilm. That includes the Benioff-Weiss Star Wars Trilogy, which, according to Cinema Blend, has a movie set for release on December 16, 2022. In the meantime, fans can watch movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in theaters on Dec. 20, 2019.
