When Does ‘Riverdale’ Return? Season 4 Is Coming Back For Its Midseason Start In 2020

Not going to lie, we have no idea what we’re going to do once the Riverdale Season 4 hiatus starts after the midseason finale on Wednesday, Dec. 11. The CW series is bound to end the first half on a cliffhanger. And quite frankly, we’re not sure if our hearts can take any more. Regardless, the only good news is that the teen drama will come back in the new year. But when does Riverdale return in 2020? The season 4 winter premiere will be back sooner than you think.

When will ‘Riverdale’ Season 4 return for its midseason premiere? (Updated)

As of this write-up, The CW has yet to release the Riverdale Season 4 winter premiere air date and time. However, it’s likely the network will reveal the start date after the midseason finale on Dec. 11. So stay tuned.

Nevertheless, it’s possible to predict the potential Riverdale midseason premiere, based on previous seasons. For example, seasons two and three both started their midseason hiatus in mid-December. Then the series came back in mid-January.

So if The CW continues to follow the same schedule, fans might see Riverdale Season 4 return on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020. But then again, you’ll have to wait until the network announces the official midseason premiere date.

Update: According to Entertainment Tonight, Riverdale returns with its midseason premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. ET.

‘Riverdale’ will air a crossover with ‘Katy Keene’ on Feb. 5

Although Riverdale fans don’t know the exact release date for the 2020 midseason premiere, at least a new episode has already been confirmed for Wednesday, Feb. 5. And even better, the new season 4 episode will feature a crossover between Riverdale and Katy Keene, a spinoff series kicking off on Feb. 6.

According to E! News, Katy Keene (Lucy Hale) will guest star in an episode of Riverdale when Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) takes a trip to New York City for a college interview. The publication also revealed Katy and Veronica are old friends and go on a shopping spree together. In a statement, executive producers, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi, said:

Before Katy Keene officially premieres, we all thought it would be super-fun to do a crossover that took Veronica to Katy’s world — New York City — and established Katy in the Riverdale universe. For our first Riverdale/Katy crossover, we couldn’t be more excited that it’s old friends Veronica and Katy — Cami and Lucy — having fun and heart-to-hearts!

But even if you aren’t into the spinoff series, the crossover event means Riverdale Season 4 returns with new episodes on Feb. 5 at the latest.

What will happen in the ‘Riverdale’ Season 4 midseason finale?

Although some viewers are already anticipating the Riverdale midseason premiere in 2020, we still have to get past the winter finale first. And per usual, everything is about to get real in the episode titled, “Chapter Sixty-Six: Tangerine.”

According to the episode’s synopsis, each of Riverdale’s key players will be involved in arcs that could lead to major storylines the new year. Veronica enlists her Abuelita (Ana Mercedes) against her father. It also seems Veronica might be performing in the episode as well.

On Dec. 10, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted, “I LOVE tomorrow night’s #Riverdale. So much drama, but it also has one of my favorite musical numbers that we’ve done! #rocketman.” He then attached a photo of Veronica sprawled over a table, seemingly in mid-song.

Elsewhere, Archie (KJ Apa) and FP (Skeet Ulrich) attempt to take down Dodger (Juan Riedinger). Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) also seems to make peace with her brother, Jason’s (Trevor Stines) death.

Then Betty (Lili Reinhart) investigates the attacks aimed at her, alongside Charles (Wyatt Nash). But in the teaser trailer for Riverdale Season 4 Episode 9, things get a little worrisome for Betty, as her mother comes at her with a knife. “Mom!” Betty screams as the clip fades to the show’s logo. Yikes.

Meanwhile, Jughead searches for his grandpa, and fans may finally get to meet Forsythe Pendleton Jones I, played by guest star Timothy Webber. That said, there’s no telling how this new addition plays into Jughead’s fate — and potential death. But it looks like we’re going to get some answers in the midseason finale on Dec. 11.

During an interview with TV Guide in May 2019, Aguirre-Sacasa was asked if the Riverdale creator killed Jughead.

“You have to stay tuned through [the] Season 4 midseason finale to answer that question,” he said.
