‘Riverdale’: The Rift Between Reggie and His Dad Reveals A Major Plot Hole

Though it’s well into the fourth season of the acclaimed hit drama–The CW’s Riverdale is full of twists and turns. There have been many revelations in the gritty teen drama and most of the time when a mystery is solved or something is uncovered–it fits into the story perfect. 

However, one of Riverdale’s latest revelations seemingly came out of nowhere and it’s leaving fans scratching their heads in confusion.

What’s going on with Reggie and his dad?

If there is one thing we know about Riverdale, it’s that the show is dramatic AF. Typically the drama (like all of that insanity with The Farm) builds for a while. However, in last week’s episode when Reggie’s abusive relationship with his dad was uncovered–we just felt unsettled. 

If you watched the episode, you know that Reggie took a baseball bat to his father’s car after being screamed at in football practice. He later told Archie that the entire incident allowed him to have a productive conversation with his dad about their contentious relationship.

However, like many of us — both Archie and Veronica were shocked to know that Reggie’s dad is abusive. Did we miss something?

While we were trying to unpack the mystery triplets on Riverdale and mourning the loss of Luke Perry’s Fred Andrews, it appears that we missed all of the signs of what Reggie has been going through with his father.

If you recall–back when that Gryphons and Gargoyles situation was going down, Reggie revealed that his dad had given him a black eye for asking about the game. We’re actually stunned that we had no recollection of this. Clearly, we were the only ones who were lost and confused. One Reddit user pointed out,

Yeah, I was so confused when Veronica was telling Archie that she thinks Reggie is being abused by his dad, like they weren’t even hinting at it in the past. They were straight-out basically saying it. It’s not like Reggie would just come to school with a black eye w/out any context, but he even said something like, ‘My dad gave me this shiner when I tried asking him about G&G.’ And if I’m remembering correctly, I think even Betty said it when she was confronting all of the parents about G&G in Veronica’s speakeasy.

Yikes, in our defense there is always so much going on in Riverdale that it’s super hard to keep up with all of the smaller details. Also, since Reggie was the only one who ever brought this up, and his friends never delved further into it– we totally forgot about it.

Now that the cat is out of the bag (officially) we wonder how Reggie and his friends are going to handle this next. We also have the sneaking suspicion that this revelation will lead to something much bigger on Riverdale this season. For now, at least, it looks like this might help the teens of Riverdale be slightly less self-centered.
