Robert Pattinson Was ‘F**king Furious’ When News Leaked He Might Be The Next Batman
Robert Pattinson will be the next actor to portray Bruce Wayne and his alter ego in the tentatively titled The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves. The Twilight star finally opened up about his grueling audition process, the backlash that came with the rumors, and revealed that he wanted the role more than anyone knew.
‘The Batman’ rumors left him ‘furious’
In a new interview with Variety, Robert Pattinson revealed that he was Googling himself after rumors started running rampant on the internet that he was going to be the next Batman. Not only were the rumors premature, they left Pattinson ‘f**king furious.’ Not because they weren’t true – they weren’t he had not even auditioned yet – but the Twilight heartthrob was afraid his teen idol past would cause Warner Bro. to take him out of the running.
“When that thing leaked, I was f—ing furious,” Pattinson recalls on a recent rainy afternoon in London. “Everyone was so upset. Everyone was panicking from my team. I sort of thought that had blown up the whole thing.”
As for the immediate backlash, Pattinson was ok with it. “To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting,” he says. “It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.”
Robert Pattinson also revealed that he wanted the lead in The Batman longer than anyone can imagine. When he heard Matt Reeves was working on a script, he immediately tried to set up a meeting.
“I’d had Batman in my mind for a while,” Pattinson says. “It’s such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I’d been prodding Matt. He didn’t accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him.”
Just like Christian Bale did for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy between 2005 and 2012 (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises) Pattinson has signed on for three films. And, Reeves says this trilogy will focus on Bruce Wayne when he is in his early thirties and still trying to figure out his crime-fighting role.
Reeves – who is writing the script as well as directing the film – is rumored to be setting the story in the 1990s and it will focus on Batman’s investigative work. Instead of going for an action-packed film, Reeves wants a noir-driven detective version of the character.
“I want to do a very point of view-driven — you know, this film and with all films what I try to do in an almost Hitchcockian sense is to use the camera and use the storytelling so that you become the character and you empathize with that point of view, and I think there’s a chance to do an almost Noir-driven, detective version of Batman that is point-of-view-driven in a very, very powerful way that hopefully is going to connect you to what’s going on inside of his head and inside of his heart,” said Reeves.
One celebrity is on board with Pattinson being the next Batman
Superfan Jaden Smith – the son of actor and rapper Will Smith – believes that Pattinson will be the best Batman yet.
After many fans voiced their disappointment on social media over Ben Affleck’s turn as the Caped Crusader, many started offering up suggestions on who should play the role next – especially when the rumors started to swirl that Affleck was hanging up his cape.
One of the suggestions was Robert Pattinson, but when Reeves announced that he had landed the role, it still left Batman fans divided. However, the 21-year-old Smith says he lost it when he heard the news.
“Oh my gosh, I don’t even know what to say. Amazing things are happening every day that you don’t even know. I don’t even know. I’m at a loss for words with how excited I am for him. It has to happen. It has to f***ing happen. He will be the best Batman. I’m losing my f***ing shit,” Smith told Rolling Stone
Robert Pattinson’s return to the blockbuster
Robert Pattinson has avoided signing on for another blockbuster franchise since the end of the Twilight series in 2012. Since then, Pattinson has found success as a respected actor in more indie movies than one can count, including, Maps to the Stars, Cosmopolis, The Lost City of Z, and even earned Oscar buzz for High Life. However, he couldn’t say no to the idea of playing Batman, especially for Reeves who wants an emotional, character-driven story.
Reeves pointed out that Batman is supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and it appears that Pattinson couldn’t resist that angle. This will be a new kind of Batman compared to what fans have previously seen on the big screen. And, there is no doubt that fans will let Reeves and Pattinson know exactly how they feel about it as soon as it hits theaters.
Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 25, 2021.
