Get Ready For ’90s Nostalgia With the ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ Movie
We are without a doubt living in an era rife with nostalgia for the 1990s. The culture of the decade that, for some, still feels like just 10 years ago, has found its way into today’s fashion, lingo, and, perhaps most notably, entertainment. And now, there’s another slice of the ‘90s headed your way: The Netflix film Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling. Take a look.
Remember Rocko’s Modern Life?
In case you didn’t have access to Nickelodeon during this time, or maybe you just weren’t allowed to watch it, Rocko’s Modern Life was a cartoon that aired from 1993-1996 on the kid’s network. It portrays Rocko, a wallaby hailing from the species’ native Australia, who finds himself living in O-Town, USA.
Accompanying the reserved titular character were his friends, Heffer (a cow), Filburt (a turtle), and his pet dog, Spunky. He lived next door to a toad couple, the Bigheads. The series was known for its social commentary on modern times and appealing to both adults and children.
A glimpse of the film was first seen two years ago
At San Diego Comic-Con almost exactly two years ago, many first learned of the Rocko’s Modern Life movie, subtitled Static Cling. It was meant to be a TV special for Nick and would depict Rocko and his friends having spent the last 20 years in space, only to return to a very different O-Town than they were used to.
In the sneak peek, Rocko is taken aback by all of the technological and cultural changes the 21st century has brought. While Heffer and Filburt are excited to try new things, Rocko becomes more and more overwhelmed by the new normal.
We finally have an official release date on Netflix
When presented at Comic-Con, Static Cling was planned to be released in 2018, with all of the old cast members (and some new ones) on board. However, 2018 came and went, and there was still no news.
In May 2019, it was announced that Netflix had acquired the rights to the film. On July 16, 2019, the streaming service revealed a brief teaser for Static Cling, revealing that it will premiere on Aug. 9, 2019.
Could a full Rocko’s Modern Life series be next?
With this incredible news comes more questions. The first being: Will Netflix also purchase the rights to stream Seasons 1-4 of Rocko’s Modern Life on its platform? Right now, that looks like a hard ‘no.’ At present, episodes are available to purchase through iTunes, Amazon, and the like.
However, depending on what Nick/Viacom would charge for it, if Netflix wanted to create a revival series stemming from Static Cling, it might also go in for the original episodes. Of course, there’s a lot of red tape there to deal with. So for now, Static Cling is all we get.
Other Nickelodeon shows getting revivals
The Nick animated ‘90s series revival project doesn’t start and end with Rocko’s Modern Life. The 2017 TV movie Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie won an Emmy, and the All That revival is in full swing. Additionally, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Rugrats, and Blue’s Clues are all gearing up for new episodes. It’s like we never left the ‘90s.
