Rose McGowan: Ben Affleck and Others ‘All Knew’ About Harvey Weinstein’s Behavior

Rose McGowan is calling out celebrities like Ben Affleck who claim that they did not know about Harvey Weinstein’s behavior while working with him.

In his statement this week, Ben Affleck implies that he was not previously aware of the numerous accusations against Harvey Weinstein, saying that he is saddened to learn that “a man who I worked with used his position of power to intimidate, sexually harass and manipulate many women over decades.” He goes on to say that he’s asking himself what he can do to prevent this from happening to others.

But actress Rose McGowan, who herself is a Harvey Weinstein accuser, called Affleck out on Twitter following this statement, claiming that Affleck was fully aware of the fact that Weinstein was allegedly harassing and assaulting women who worked for him on a regular basis. In fact, she says that Affleck once told her to her face that he asked Weinstein to “stop doing that.” She ended the tweet by telling Affleck, “you lie.”

This came after McGowan lashed out at Affleck in a more general way.

McGowan had previously been calling on celebrities like Ben Affleck to admonish Harvey Weinstein, though she was also asking Casey Affleck to speak out, and he has not done so yet. Casey Affleck himself has been accused of sexual harassment.

As more and more celebrities release statements saying that they did not know about Harvey Weinstein’s behavior, McGowan has continued to say that all of them knew, although Ben Affleck is the only one she has called out by name. In one tweet, McGowan posted a quote about good men remaining silent in the face of evil, writing, “YOU ALL KNEW.”

Rose McGowan had previously called on Matt Damon to make a statement about Harvey Weinstein. He soon did so, but while saying that he had no idea about the Hollywood producer’s behavior. McGowan has not yet said anything about Damon’s statement and whether she believes that he truly did not know about Weinstein.

“We know this stuff goes on in the world,” Damon told Deadline. “I did five or six movies with Harvey. I never saw this. I think a lot of actors have come out and said, everybody’s saying we all knew. That’s not true. This type of predation happens behind closed doors, and out of public view. If there was ever an event that I was at and Harvey was doing this kind of thing and I didn’t see it, then I am so deeply sorry, because I would have stopped it.”

McGowan has suggested that she was raped by Harvey Weinstein in the 1990s. Back in 2016, she tweeted that her ex-boyfriend sold their movie to her rapist for distribution. She appears to be talking about Planet Terror, which was directed by her ex-boyfriend Robert Rodriguez and distributed by Harvey Weinstein’s The Weinstein Company.

She has not gone on record in any of the recent investigations about Harvey Weinstein, but The New York Times’ initial expose stated that Weinstein reached a settlement with McGowan in 1997 after “an episode in a hotel room during the Sundance Film Festival.” McGowan had just starred in Scream, which was distributed by Dimension Films, a company founded by Bob Weinstein.
