Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s very candid interviews about living in the spotlight were eye-opening for many — and it turns out the royal family has been very concerned about the couple as well.

Prince Harry and Markle opened up about their experience

The Sussexes each provided their perspective about the intense scrutiny they face daily when they spoke in interviews featured in their documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey

Markle shared the struggles they’ve faced, noting: “I’ve said for a long time to H — that’s what I call him — it’s not enough to just survive something. That’s not the point of life. You’ve got to thrive, you’ve got to feel happy. I think I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried. I really tried. But I think what that does internally is probably really damaging.”

She added: “The biggest thing that I know is that I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair and that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile.”

Prince Harry also shed some light on why protecting his family is a priority, especially in light of his mother’s experience, noting: “My mum clearly taught me a certain set of values of which I always try and uphold, despite the role and the job… I think I will always protect my family, and now I have a family to protect.”

The royal family feels they’ve “gone a step too far” but are concerned

ET reports that, according to a royal source, those close to the couple are “equally frustrated by the interview [in the documentary] and concerned about their well-being,” adding that there is “great sympathy for Meghan and Harry over what they have faced particularly related to press intrusion.”

The source continued: “Everyone wants what’s best for them” though the royal family feels they have “gone a step too far” with being so open in the documentary.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl told ET that “the documentary came as a bit of a bombshell for the royal family.” She added, “I don’t think anyone expected Harry and Meghan to make some of the comments that they did.”

Family members are reaching out

Nicholl believes that some saw the Sussexes’ documentary comments as “a bit of a cry for help” and notes that members of the family have reached out.

She shared: “[Members of the royal family] clearly can see that this is a couple who are struggling with their new position, their new royal roles and I think members of the family have reached out to try and help.”

She continued: “It’s my understanding that the Duchess of Cambridge has tried to communicate and has offered to be there for both of them. And the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, Harry’s stepmother who very rarely gets involved with family dynamics, has actually reached out to Meghan as well just to see if she can help in any capacity. There’s no doubt this has been a difficult time for Meghan and Harry and I think members of the family are reaching out to try and help them.”
