Being around your in-laws can be taxing. You have to be on your best behavior and do everything perfectly. If families are all about love, then in-laws are all about judging.
For Meghan Markle, the pressure must be tenfold. Not only did she marry into a foreign family, but she joined a royal one.
At first, the family seemed welcoming of Markle, but after she and Prince Harry were married, reports started swirling that she and certain family members, particularly her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, didn’t get along.
One reason for the discord was apparently that Markle commonly broke royal protocol. She was always hugging someone or wearing the wrong thing or doing a number of other things that royals just don’t do.
Why was Markle sitting away from the royals at Wimbledon?
Last week, Markle attended Wimbledon to watch the tennis matches. While other members of her family also attended the games, Markle did not sit with them in the Royal Box.
Some people thought that this could have been due to the fact that Markle was dressed inappropriately in jeans, which are clearly not allowed in the royal area.
But in reality, Markle just wanted to sit closer to see her friend Serena Williams play, according to Allure.
Some rumors also flew around that Markle only wanted to watch Williams and Andy Murray play instead of staying to watch British players and that the employees of the venue were upset at the Duchess about that. Those rumors have been shot down by an official spokesperson for the All England Club.
“Any suggestion that the duchess’s visit was anything other than a privilege for the club is categorically not the view of the club, and she is always welcome to attend the championships,” the spokesperson said, according to W Magazine.
What other times has Markle separated herself from the family?
This isn’t the first time that people have seen Markle separate herself from the rest of the family. At this year’s Trooping the Colour, she and Prince Harry stood quite far away from Kate Middleton and Prince William on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
But there is a simple reason for that as well.
“She was not as prominent perhaps as some people might have expected, but there’s a pecking order,” Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, told People of why Markle stood where she did.
“There was no slight intended, but William being the older, more senior brother would go out [first] with his wife.”
And this standing order was no different than the previous year.
“There’s no one laying this out, telling her where to stand,” a palace source told the outlet last year. “And there were a lot of kids who everyone would want at the front.”
Does Markle really have an issue with Prince Harry’s family?
Despite numerous rumors of feuds within the royal family, Markle has never said that she has any issues with any of her new family members, nor have any of them ever spoken out against her. As with the incidents at Wimbledon and the Trooping the Colour, there have been normal explanations for everything that has occurred between them.
