9 Surprising Things We Learned About the British Royal Family in 2019
It has been a very eventful year for the British royal family. Even though some followers are calling it Queen Elizabeth’s sequel “annus horribilis,” second only to her worst year ever in 1992, it’s important not to forget all the good that came from 2019.
Unfortunately, happy events like Archie Harrison’s birth and baptism are being overshadowed by scandals, like Prince Andrew’s PR scandal and subsequent firing. Through it all, we’ve been learning more than we ever thought we would about the royal family. Even for fans who thought they knew everything, there have been quite a few surprises.
The royals are surely hoping for a calmer, less drama-filled new year. In the meantime, let’s recap everything we learned in the past 12 months.
Queen Elizabeth has more than a closet
Forget a walk-in closet — according to former butler Paul Burrell, the queen has an entire floor devoted to her “costumes.”
“The Queen has to have her outfits brought down to her; all her clothes are kept on the top floor,” Burrell explained to Yahoo UK. “Her dresser will bring down two outfits in the morning, which are sketched with pieces of material clipped to them so that the Queen can remember whether it’s silk or cotton or wool.”
Then she chooses from there. She doesn’t even have to visit her own closet!
Prince William and Prince Harry aren’t close like they used to be
Rumors of a “royal rift” have been swirling for years, but until now nothing was confirmed. Then Prince Harry participated in that groundbreaking ITV interview and basically told everyone that even if there wasn’t a huge feud, these two brothers were definitely drifting apart.
As for addressing the fight, Prince Harry said, “inevitably stuff happens” and that they’re “certainly on different paths” for now. But he ended on a happy note, reassuring everyone that they’ll always be there for each other because they’ll always be brothers.
Archie is the spitting image of Prince Harry
Much to everyone’s delight, the newest member of the royal family looks exactly like his father, Prince Harry. He even has red hair!
Obviously, these things can change over time, but for now royal fans are cooing over comparisons between Prince Harry’s baby photos and snapshots of Archie at the same age. They’re even rumored to have the same easygoing personality.
The Duchess of Cornwall has a cheeky sense of humor
Camilla Parker Bowles didn’t always have the best reputation with the public. But ever since she was caught on video winking to someone in the background during President Trump’s state visit, everyone has a newfound respect for her comedic timing.
We’ll never know who she was winking at or why. But we now know she has a lot hiding behind that polite smile.
Meghan Markle has a private nickname for Prince Harry
The ITV interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave us some insight into their private lives. For example, Meghan Markle revealed her nickname for her husband.
During the interview, she says “I’ve said for a long time to H — that’s what I call him…” It’s clear that Markle didn’t mean to let the nickname slip, but we’re so glad she did.
Princess Charlotte looks like Princess Diana’s family
When Princess Diana’s niece Lady Kitty Spencer shared a throwback photo of herself on Instagram, fans were floored at how much she looked like Princess Charlotte. The Windsor genes may be dominant most of the time, but clearly the Spencer bloodline is still going strong, too.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle don’t care what you think
In a family that cares deeply about their image, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are refusing to smile in the face of pain. They launched a massive lawsuit against the media, citing “unfair treatment” and emotional turmoil. Rumor has it the rest of the royals are appalled by this move. But they don’t seem to care.
Prince William and Kate Middleton have a strong marriage
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge could have buckled under the pressure when rumors exploded earlier this year that Prince William had been unfaithful. Tabloids had a field day asserting that HRH had stepped out with Middleton’s “rural rival,” Rose Hanbury.
But these two behaved with their signature sense of decorum by ignoring the rumors until they went away. And now, they look more in love than ever.
The monarchy is more fragile than we thought
Prince Andrew lost his job as a working royal thanks to his association with Jeffrey Epstein and the disastrous Newsnight interview when he tried to clear his name. But now that he’s disgraced the royal reputation, it has people questioning if we even need the royal family at all.
Royal fans are horrified that these questions are being asked. But in the end, Parliament has the power to withdraw funding from the royal family, and without that, they’ll fade into obscurity.
Perish the thought!
