Some royal fans assumed that Queen Elizabeth was going to cancel her annual Christmas speech for 2019. After all, the family went through more turmoil than they normally do, and followers wondered what kind of good Her Majesty could find in a year filled with drama. During the speech, the queen described the year as “quite bumpy.”
But instead of canceling the Christmas speech for the second time in history, the queen forged ahead with a message of hope for the future. However, like always, there were certain things she didn’t say too. Like the subtle hint Queen Elizabeth may have been giving with her outfit choice.
Queen Elizabeth discussed some high and low points in the year
Not everything that happened in 2019 was awful. For example, the queen welcomed another great-grandchild with the addition of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son Archie in May. There were multiple successful tours throughout the year, including the Prince of Wales’ historic visit to Cuba — the first official visit by the British royals ever. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spread goodwill in Africa while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge encouraged tourism to Pakistan.
But despite all this happiness, the negative events of the year mostly overshadowed the good. And though her son Prince Andrew’s sex scandal is likely weighing heavy on the queen’s heart, that’s not the thing that internet conspiracy theorists think she was addressing with her outfit.
Some fans think the queen opposes Brexit
Members of the British royal family do not express their personal political affiliations, nor do they vote in elections. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have opinions at all. Royal analysts believe that Queen Elizabeth is opposed to the United Kingdom exiting the European Union (EU), also known as Brexit.
During her speech, the queen said, “It takes patience and time to rebuild trust, and progress often comes through small steps.” Vox reported that this statement may have been alluding to the contentious issue of Brexit and the strong division throughout the nation.
Did Queen Elizabeth’s brooch send a secret message?
The internet sleuths decided that Queen Elizabeth’s choice of outfit for the speech was no accident. On the momentous day, Her Majesty donned a royal blue dress along with a sapphire and diamond brooch. Fans couldn’t help but notice that the blue of the queen’s dress was similar to the EU flag, while the 12 diamonds in her brooch look like the circle of stars on the flag.
The speech came shortly after the Conservative party scored a major win in the most recent election, securing the largest majority in the legislature since 1987. Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed that the United Kingdom would exit the EU by the end of January 2020.
The queen may have sent subtle messages before
This wouldn’t be the first time Queen Elizabeth allegedly used jewelry to get her point across. During the first day of a state visit from Donald Trump in 2018, Her Majesty selected a brooch that she also wore to her father’s funeral in 1952. This subtlety was not lost on her audience.
There’s a chance that both brooch choices were completely coincidental. But, there’s also a possibility that Queen Elizabeth has deeply held convictions that she can’t say with words. So she uses accessories instead.
