Royal Fans Vote on if They Can Accept Camilla Parker Bowles Becoming Queen
It’s no secret that the public’s perception of Camilla Parker Bowles has changed over time. After Prince Charles and Princess Diana split, Camilla was blamed as she was seen as the sole reason for their breakup. Then following the tragic death of the People’s Princess in 1997, she was vilified again and considered public enemy No. 1.
The now-Duchess of Cornwall and her husband worked hard for years trying to get the public to finally accept her and even promised when they were married that “Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH the princess consort when the Prince of Wales accedes to the throne.” Times though have changed and many think Charles is going to abandon that idea.
But what about royal fans? More than 20 years after Diana’s passing, are they finally ready to welcome Camilla as the next queen? Here are the results of the latest poll, plus why Camilla’s family would prefer she not have the title of queen consort.
Does the public want Camilla to be queen consort?
Charles is the heir apparent who will one day take over for Queen Elizabeth II and by his side will be Camilla.
Two decades ago this would be unthinkable. Back then people would have rather had him be single than have another woman, besides Diana, become queen. But how does the majority feel now?
Well, apparently time doesn’t heal all wounds because in a recent poll conducted by The Express, 62% of Britons said they would not be pleased if Charles’ second wife became Queen Camilla. Only 35% of those who voted were fine with it and 3% were still unsure.
Does Camilla’s family want her to be queen consort?
Surprisingly, those closest to Camilla don’t want her to be queen consort either.
Royal author Penny Junor spoke to a member of Camilla’s family who expressed their concerns about her having that title.
“At least one member of her family doesn’t want her to become queen for fear of a backlash,” Junor revealed. “Between Diana and the queen is a hard place to be. People might go a bit wild. Queen [Elizabeth] who’s been in our lives forever, the worship of Diana, and suddenly Queen Camilla. It’s going to be such shake-up. I fear for both [Charles and his wife].”
Does Camilla want to be queen consort?
Along with the public and her family, the duchess herself isn’t keen on the idea of being queen. According to Junor, Camilla has made it clear that she would rather be princess consort when Charles ascends the throne.
“Friends and family know it is not something she wants — she has said as much,” Junor wrote in her book, The Duchess. “[Camilla] is in this position because of her love of the man, not because of her desire to be anything more than a support to him. The whole business of his accession is something she dreads and, in her inimitable way, is choosing not to think about.”
Birkenhead MP Frank Field explained that it’s Charles who is steadfast on the duchess becoming queen.
“Charles will try and press for her to be crowned queen,” Field said, adding, “It is right that he should do so. We have no known basis of the wife of the king not being crowned queen. It is how that goal is achieved which is crucially important.”
