Rumor: ‘The Mandalorian’ Will Bring This Fan-Favorite Character into the Disney+ Series
The Mandalorian is roughly halfway through its first season, and fans can’t seem to get enough. The new Disney+ series has set off the nation’s latest obsession and is instrumental in igniting a new era of Star Wars. In fact, it appears the show can do no wrong in the eyes of many fans. However, one rumor currently circling the show could make it even more of a must-see event.
SPOILERS for The Mandalorian ahead!
An anti-hero with a tragic backstory
Fans know that the unnamed Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) has a tragic past. Previous episodes have established that he narrowly survived a droid attack, presumably during the Clone Wars. Because the show is essentially a space Western, The Mandalorian Season 1 has thus far played into the mystery surrounding its protagonist.
As the show proceeds — and “Mando” continues to protect the child now in his care — we expect the veil of his past to be pulled back a bit. Perhaps this could reveal that he isn’t a born Mandalorian but was accepted by the society. Maybe there’s some tie between Mando and Greef Carga (Carl Weathers) we don’t yet know about.
Whatever the case may be, fans of The Mandalorian are in for some surprises in the back half of season 1. The series might even uncover closer ties to established Star Wars mythos as it goes on. For instance, if this latest rumor holds any water, it could be quite the about-face for a show that has attempted to stand apart from the films.
The Jedi Master rumored to appear
According to Jason Ward of Making Star Wars, the big reveal that could be coming to The Mandalorian involves Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. The rumor states that Obi-Wan is the one who intervenes during Mando’s childhood, rescuing him from the droid army. This would certainly fit the timeline, as we know Obi-Wan was a leading general during the Clone Wars.
Moreover, as Ward points out, even just an Obi-Wan cameo would go a long way toward bringing in more casual Star Wars fans. The Mandalorian has smartly been downplaying connections to the larger canvas of the saga so far. But a brief appearance from McGregor would neatly contextualize The Mandalorian with what we’ve seen before without affecting the show’s story directly.
Of course, this isn’t the first rumor or theory to try and bring a fan-favorite character into The Mandalorian. Given the prominence of Mandalorian culture, it would be very easy for Boba Fett to still show up as well. Yet, as the first Star Wars show on Disney+, The Mandalorian has good reason to consider bringing Obi-Wan to the small screen as soon as possible.
Will ‘The Mandalorian’ connect the Disney+ ‘Star Wars’ shows?
After all, McGregor is already onboard to return as Obi-Wan for his own Disney+ series. Bringing him onto The Mandalorian, even briefly, would effectively help set the stage for his upcoming adventure. In fact, it could be Disney+’s first step toward tying all its Star Wars shows together.
Think of the Marvel Netflix shows and how they interconnected. Of course, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and company built up to a direct cross-over. We wouldn’t expect the Disney+ Star Wars shows to do that. But having them acknowledge each other in small ways helps each show further legitimize the next, ushering it into the decades-old tapestry that is the Star Wars universe.
In this case then, Obi-Wan Kenobi might not be The Mandalorian‘s only hope. But he certainly presents a tantalizing opportunity to interweave this new Disney+ corner of the Star Wars universe.
