RuPaul is Related to This 2020 Presidential Candidate
The 2020 presidential election is finally winding down, and the American people have fired Donald Trump as their leader. Every election year, RuPaul’s Drag Race promotes voting and getting involved, and 2020 was no different. But did you know that RuPaul has a personal connection to the 2020 race?
‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ has always featured political challenges
In 2012, season 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race featured a debate challenge that pitted the final five queens against each other to see who would be the first drag queen President of the United States. It has remained timeless for many reasons, such as RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars winner Chad Michaels’ “up-do” and Latrice Royale’s pointed yet poised read of Phi Phi O’Hara.
Four years later, the queens created political ads to convince voters why they should vote for them as their first drag president.
‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ has been extra political in the Trump years
Given that 2020 is an incredibly important election year, season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race highlighted it throughout the season, and encouraged viewers to vote at the end of every episode. The promo photos of the queens featured various red, white, and blue looks, and one runway challenge was to present the best “stars and stripes” look. The queens participated in a hilarious debate challenge, which sparked memes such as winner Jaida Essence Hall‘s “Look over there!”
RuPaul’s Drag Race has never failed to take aim at President Donald Trump and his administration. On season 11, the queens put together a performance of the fictitious musical Trump: The Rusical. Lovable New York City queen Shuga Cain dressed as the Donald for an “orange” themed runway in the same episode.
Season 10 winner Aquaria made her mark on the competition with her impersonation of First Lady Melania Trump in the Snatch Game challenge, and she’s since reprised her role as Trump’s wife for various social media videos.
RuPaul is related to a former 2020 presidential candidate
Beyond getting viewers involved in politics, RuPaul has a personal political connection himself. In October 2020, he appeared on Dr. Henry Louis Gates’ show Finding Your Roots, where he found out about his ancestry and lineage.
When RuPaul did the DNA test, the show found a link between him and a past Finding Your Roots guest: New Jersey senator Cory Booker.
“He looks like my kin!” RuPaul smiled. “There’s a sweetness about him that I’ve always loved and an intellect that is undeniable.” He added that he reminded him of his cousin.
“I hope that doesn’t surprise folks,” Booker said of their shared heritage. “[Gates] saw RuPaul and I have a very strong common DNA chain, which demonstrates that we are very close cousins. We’re directly related to each other.”
“I told everybody that would listen in my world,” Booker laughed. “I was very happy about that news and I hope that he and I can have a family reunion sometime.”
