‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Nina West Is Bringing the Christmas Cheer This Year With Her New Holiday Single

Finding a pair of cha-cha heels under the tree isn’t the only thing RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Nina West is looking forward to this holiday season.

During an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, West opened up about her preparations for the most wonderful time of the year. Though she will be spending the holidays in her quarantine bubble due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, West still plans to keep the Christmas spirit alive, starting with her new holiday single, “Cha Cha Heels.”

Nina West has been staying busy amid the coronavirus pandemic

Ever since her appearance on season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, where she placed sixth and won Miss Congeniality, West’s career hasn’t slowed down.

Over the past year, West has been busy traveling the world performing and hosting drag shows, raising millions of dollars for charitable causes, and attending A-list events — including the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, where she became the first person to walk the red carpet in full drag.

But like most entertainers, the coronavirus pandemic put a serious dent in West’s work schedule for the latter part of 2020. However, West didn’t let this crisis stop her from creating content and bringing smiles to people’s faces — especially during the holiday season.

While speaking with Showbiz Cheat Sheet via phone, West opened up about keeping the Christmas spirit alive amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Though her celebrations will look a little different this year, West still plans to make the most out of this holiday season, even if that means doing so from home.

“You know, I’m just going to do the holidays a little bit differently. I usually spend it with my mom and dad and my sisters and their families, but because of COVID, I’m going to be home,” West shared. “I’m going to be kind of hunkered down with a couple of my friends in my quarantine bubble and my dog and just [have] a very low key Christmas.”

“Last year, I was on the road, so I really didn’t have much of a holiday home,” she continued. “So I’m going to be doing a lot of baking. I’m going to be doing a lot of cooking. I’m doing a lot of drinking of red wine.”

Nina West has already started spreading the holiday cheer

Though we still have a few weeks before Christmas is upon us, West has already started getting into the holiday spirit.

Not only is she in the midst of decorating her home for the holidays — fun fact: West has five Christmas trees — but she has also been busy filming the music video for the song “Cha Cha Heels” off her 2019 Christmas album, The West Christmas Ever.

“I’m just really staying busy. I think that’s really important for me as a creative because I’m used to spending my time and the holidays on the stage in crowded venues and in bars and theaters,” the Drag Race alum shared. “I’m trying to replace that a little bit by staying busy, but I also think that I need to because things are just really different.”

“Cha Cha Heels” is the perfect dose of holiday cheer that many of us stuck at home are in need of. And according to West, spreading the joy of Christmas was precisely her intent when putting the video together.

“My heart is broken that I’m not able to do things I normally have been doing in the past,” she said. “But I’m also really grateful that I get this opportunity to do it in a new and different way and to share the season and share my joy of the season and my heart and my art for people in just a different way.”
