Rupert Grint Saw ‘Sparks’ Between Emma Watson and Tom Felton During ‘Harry Potter,’ So Your Childhood-Self Can Freak Out Now
Harry Potter fans who shipped Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) can now feel justified. For years, some fans noticed strong chemistry between the two characters in the movie franchise. However, the Slytherin and Gryffindor never got together to date onscreen — and neither did their offscreen alter egos. This left those fans wondering if the charms between Felton and Watson happened all inside their heads. But now, Rupert Grint — who played Ron Weasley — revealed he saw “sparks” between his co-stars while filming Harry Potter.

When speaking with Entertainment Tonight about his new Apple TV+ show, Servant, Grint reminisced on his Harry Potter castmates and revealed he could see Watson and Felton together.
“There was always something,” Grint said. “There was a little bit of a spark.”
However, Grint also explained that he didn’t want to start any rumors about Watson and Felton dating. So the actor confirmed the “sparks” he noticed happened while they were filming Harry Potter back in the day. And in any case, it wasn’t anything serious.
“But we were kids,” Grint told ET. It was like any kind of playground romance.”
Nevertheless, Grint then shared he didn’t experience the same kind of sparks with anyone while on the set of Harry Potter.
“I didn’t have any sparks,” he said. “I was spark-free.”
Are Emma Watson and Tom Felton dating now?
Grint’s statement may not come as a surprise for longtime fans. Back in 2012, Watson openly admitted she had a childhood crush on Felton while filming Harry Potter. But it seems Felton’s comments about their relationship quickly put an end to it.
“Between the ages of 10 and 12 I had a really terrible crush on Tom Felton,” she said at The Jonathan Ross Show. “We love a bad guy, and he was a few years older and he had a skateboard. And that just did it, really … He was so cool. He totally knew. And the thing is, he’d turn and go, ‘Oh, I see her in a younger sisterly way.’ And it just broke my heart, still does.”
Now, Watson and Felton are still close friends today, years after the Harry Potter franchise ended. They have been spotted together on multiple occasions, which is often featured in each other’s Instagram accounts. But more recently, on Aug. 19, 2019, Felton posted a photo with Watson in South Africa.
“Quick learner x,” Felton captioned the picture of the two looking cozy in pajamas as Felton seemingly taught Watson how to play the guitar.
Of course, the pic had Potterheads across the world asking if Watson and Felton were dating. However, it doesn’t look like anything is going on between the two Harry Potter co-stars. And a few hours after the Instagram photo was posted, ET reported Watson and Felton were not dating and just good friends.
Emma Watson calls herself ‘self-partnered’ and Tom Felton responds
Although they may not be dating, Watson and Felton clearly have a supportive relationship with one another. In an interview with British Vogue for December 2019, Watson revealed she is single and proud of it.
“I never believed the whole ‘I’m happy single’ spiel,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is totally spiel.’ It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered.”
Meanwhile, when speaking with the Daily Mail, Felton responded to Watson’s “self-partnered” comments. Not only does he support Watson’s newly-coined term, but he also relates.
“I like it! It’s the first I’ve heard of it, but it’s great,” Felton said. “I’m in the same category, to be honest with you, quite happily self-partnered. I think in this day and age it’s not a necessity to be with someone just for the sake of being with someone, so I like the idea of self-partnering.”
Felton also confirmed he sees Watson more frequently now, as the two actors both reside in Los Angeles. And in all honesty, Felton’s comments about Watson will make fans gush over their friendship.
“It’s always nice to bump into her, see her at the beach, or over dinner, or whatever,” Felton said. “She’s an incredibly smart and lovely young lady, so it’s always nice to bump into each other and slightly reminisce about old times but also about looking forward to the future.”
