The Sad Reason Princess Diana Gave Birth to Prince William Early: ‘I Couldn’t Handle [It]’

Princess Diana’s life wasn’t nearly as glamorous behind the scenes as it once seemed. She had a strained relationship with her husband, Prince Charles, and she was constantly hounded by the paparazzi. Plus, Diana was very young when she married into the royal family, and she never quite learned how to handle it.

The best things in Diana’s life were her two children, Prince William and Prince Harry. But there’s a sad reason why Diana’s first birth didn’t go as planned.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles didn’t have a strong marriage

When Diana and Charles started dating, there wasn’t much of a spark. Charles had first met Diana when she was 16; he had briefly dated her older sister. He enjoyed Diana’s company, and when she was suggested as a potential wife, he liked the idea. However, he was still in love with Camilla, and he could only keep that hidden for so long.

Charles proposed to Diana after only 12 dates, and both reportedly wanted to call off the wedding, but neither did. Instead, they tied the knot in 1981 and remained married for more than 15 years.

Diana gave birth to William early because of ‘pressure’ from the media

Diana was 12 years younger than her husband, and she and Charles didn’t wait long to start a family. Only a few months after they wed, Diana learned she was pregnant with the couple’s first child. The press, which had always been a problem for the princess, became even more relentless once they learned she was carrying the future king or queen.

Years after William’s birth, Diana spoke to royal biographer Andrew Morton about what her life as a royal was really like. And during their conversations, she revealed that she gave birth to William early because the media had become too much. “William had to be induced because I couldn’t handle the press pressure any longer,” Diana told Morton, according to Town & Country. William was born on June 21, 1982, though it’s unclear what his exact due date was.

There were also rumors that Diana was induced to give birth around one of Charles’ polo matches, though that hasn’t been confirmed. Regardless, the princess made headlines when rumors swirled once more that she had given birth standing up. Though that has not been confirmed either, Charles reportedly held his wife as she stood to welcome their new baby boy.

Princess Diana once called her sex life with Charles ‘odd’

Diana and Charles’ marriage didn’t last. Eventually, the two realized they were not in love, and they both engaged in extramarital affairs. Diana later revealed that she had an “odd” sex life with her husband and that the two stopped sharing any intimacy by the time Harry was eight.

Diana and Charles seemed to have problems from the start, and she had suspicion that he was seeing Camilla behind her back up until right before she married him. Charles once said in an interview that he remained faithful to Diana until it became abundantly clear that there was no love between them.
