Sam Smith Comes out as Non-Binary in Emotional Instagram Post
Though Smith’s lyrics are quite vulnerable, the singer rarely opens up about their personal life outside of songs. Smith never talks about their relationships and mostly keeps fans at an arm’s length.
With a recent Instagram post, the musician has decided to change all of that and let followers in on a big part of their life.
Smith comes out as non-binary
Pronouns are important. They are the way in which we identify people. Unfortunately, some people don’t feel like the pronouns that they were given at birth really describe them. People who feel this way may change their pronouns to that of the opposite sex, or even opt to be called “they/them” if they don’t feel like either of the others fit them.
Today, Smith posted on Instagram that they would like to go by the latter.
“Today is a good day so here goes,” they wrote under a photo of the pronouns. “I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”
“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f**k it! I understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”
Though Smith publicly made this change, they went on to say that they were not yet comfortable really going into detail about the decision.
“P.s. I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non-binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am. So, for now, I just want to be VISIBLE and open. If you have questions and are wondering what this all means I’ll try my best to explain but I have also tagged below the human beings who are fighting the good fight every day. These are activists and leaders of the non-binary/trans community that have helped me and given me so much clarity and understanding.”
They, then, tagged a number of activists who had helped them on the journey.
“Love you all,” the singer finished. “I’m scared s**tless, but feeling super free right now. Be kind.”
Though some people have had harsh reactions to this change, lots of Smith’s fans have come out to defend them.
“As Sam Smith has announced they are changing their pronouns I feel like it’s worth mentioning that even if you don’t understand!!!!!!!!! it costs you absolutely nothing to respect their wishes,” one person tweeted.
“The sheer torrent of hate and vitriol being thrown at Sam Smith for using they/them pronouns, even just in the media here in the UK, is genuinely disgusting and horrifying,” another fan wrote. “Shows you what a backwards and intolerant a place this is. #NonBinaryLivesMatter #WontBeErased.”
“#SamSmith has gone up in my estimation,” one person said. “Thanks to ‘them’ I understand what it is to be a human being and not a woman or a man. I hope I haven’t missed the point.”
