Sarah Ferguson Reveals That Prince Charles Saved Her After a Scary Accident
Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew divorced in 1996 but the duchess is still spotted at a number of royal events today and maintains a close relationship with her ex-husband. Not everyone in the royal family though is a huge fan of Fergie.
While her relationship with her former father-in-law, Prince Philip, has been well documented, there are reports that she and Prince Charles don’t get along either. But that wasn’t always the case. In fact, the internet has been buzzing recently over a story Fergie once told about how the Prince of Wales actually saved her when she was involved in a scary accident.
Here’s what the Duchess of York said about Charles saving her after she lost consciousness.
Charles pulled Fergie from the water
Following her divorce from Prince Andrew, Ferguson wrote about her relationship with the future king in her autobiography.
Fergie explained that she was very close to Princess Diana and her husband and called Charles “an extraordinary person.”
She added that the Duke of Cornwall “was a very good friend to me then; we found the same things funny, made each other laugh. We don’t see each other anymore, and I miss him more than he knows.”
The duchess then recalled the time Charles saved her after an awful accident when they were skiing in Switzerland and she was four months pregnant with her and Andrew’s oldest daughter, Princess Beatrice.
“One morning in March 1988, when I was four months pregnant with our first child, I somehow skied into a stream and fell head-first,” she wrote. “I chipped the hangman’s bone in my neck and for a second fell unconscious. To my great good fortune, the Prince of Wales was close by and jumped in to rescue me. As his boots filled with icy water, Charles pulled my head clear.”
Ferguson recounted what the heir apparent repeated to her, “‘Come on, Fergie, you can do it,’ he kept saying until I regained my wits.”
Why they don’t have a good relationship today
These days though it’s been reported that the duchess and Charles are no longer on friendly terms.
When Prince William and Kate Middleton wed in 2011, Ferguson was not invited to their wedding and that was expected as it was reportedly at Prince Philip’s request. When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot seven years later, Fergie was invited to their nuptials. However, she did not make the guestlist for the private reception that her ex-husband and daughters went to because Prince Charles didn’t want her there.
So why did their relationship go south?
An insider commented on Charles snubbing Fergie from the evening party saying, “She is not a member of the royal family anymore and Prince Charles simply doesn’t have time for her. He just can’t see why she is still such a big part of his brother’s life.”
And another source told The Sun that Charles’ reasoning for not wanting to associate with Ferguson has to do with her taking Princess Diana’s side years ago.
“Charles is not OK with Fergie. He can’t stand her in reality,” the source said. “They don’t get on personally. There’s so much baggage because he feels she sided with Diana over Camilla.”
