Sarah Ferguson Reveals That She Almost Died in the 9/11 Attacks
September 11, 2001, is a day that Americans will never forget. It’s also a day that one former royal family member will always remember.
Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, was working in New York City the day of the attacks because her Chances for Children charity’s office was in the World Trade Center. Here’s more on Fergie’s near-death experience and what she said she has learned since.
Ferguson was on her way to the North Tower that morning
In an interview with Hello!, Fergie revealed that she was on her way to the office on the 101st floor of the North Tower that morning but got stuck in traffic which delayed her getting there by 20 minutes.
“I take every minute as a blessing, I really do, and I really work hard at it,” she told the publication. “Because the minute you look too far forward, then you’re missing now. The minute you look back… you can’t go back. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.”
The mascot of Fergie’s charity was a little red rag doll. That doll, appropriately called Little Red, was sitting on the duchess’ desk when the towers collapsed.
“From 101 floors Little Red came down in her dress, a little tiny rag doll, and she was found in the rubble,” Ferguson explained. “And CNN filmed it and said ‘oh a child’s doll,’ and Larry King said ‘no, that’s Little Red, and she stands for children’s rights all over the world.’ From Little Red, I’ve gone on to build a lot of schools and taught many teachers.”
The doll is now part of the 9/11 memorial exhibit at Ground Zero.
Fergie attends 9/11 event
Fergie remembered the day that could have been her last 18 years ago when she attended the GFI Charity Day event.
The event is held every year on September 11 to commemorate those who lost their lives that day. The duchess shared photos from the day on both Twitter and Instagram with the caption: “I am delighted to have supported @streetchilduk at GFI Charity Day 2019. Every year on 11th September, GFI Charity Day is hosted to commemorate the friends, colleagues and employees lost on 9/11. 100% of global revenues raised on GFI Charity Day are donated to the participating charities, transforming thousands of lives.”
Prince Andrew’s ex supports a number of other charities in New York City and London. In June 2018, she received the Humanitarian Award at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival for her work with Children in Crisis.
The Duke and Duchess of York were married in 1986. They separated in 1992 and their divorce was finalized in 1996. Ferguson agreed to be paid $20,000 a year from the royal family and given $660,000 to buy a new house. In addition, she is said to have received around $1.8 million to start trust funds for Beatrice and Eugenie as well as another $462,000 in cash and an agreement that Andrew would pay for their daughters’ education.
Today, Fergie has an estimated net worth of $1 million.
