‘Saturday Night Live’: Why Fans Aren’t Pleased With Michael Che’s Recent Comments
Michael Che has been the center of attention lately but for all the wrong reasons. He’s made comments that fans of Saturday Night Live weren’t exactly appreciative of, including one where he spoke about Caitlyn Jenner and called her a “fella.” This past week, Che finds himself in hot water once again with some new comments that fans are talking about all over the internet.
Michael Che’s most recent comments
Che, who is one part of Weekend Update alongside Colin Jost, made a comment about a woman giving birth at 67 years of age. “A 67-year-old woman in China gave birth this week. The birth set a record for most friction,” he said. Che didn’t just stop there, but continued. “See, you guys don’t realize this but that joke took me like four hours to write. I had much better punchlines but the fellas at NBC standards said they were all too dirty.”
‘You can’t say that on TV’
Things got slightly graphic as Che continued to explain: “Like, at first I was gonna say, ‘Well I hope that kid likes his milk chalky!’ But they said, ‘You can’t say that on TV.’ It was my second favorite punchline! My first favorite being, ‘She can breastfeed just by standing over the crib.’ That’s a good one, right? Nope, NBC said, ‘Too gross,’ which is ridiculous. Too gross would be like if I said, ‘Doctors described the birth as pulling a penny out of a wad of gum. Now that would be too gross. Even I wouldn’t tell that joke on TV.”
Fans aren’t impressed by Michael Che’s remarks
Fans weren’t exactly thrilled with Che’s brazen and off-handed comments. Many consider some of the remarks as transphobic, sexist, and ageist. People have been bashing his performance ever since he first made the comment about Caitlyn Jenner.
“.@nbcsnl Seriously?! I think Michael Che can be funny, but taking a shot at trans people? DEAD NAMING a trans person? Is he going through a slump where he can’t write a decent joke? Come on! Why can’t you reign in your staff??? #Transphobic #MichaelChe,” a Twitter user wrote.
Reddit users also had their own thoughts on Che’s comments and his recent post to his Instagram Story about SNL’s episode. “Watch SNL tonight. I’ll be telling nice jokes that shouldn’t bother anybody, in any way,” Che wrote. “Lmao Che can be very funny much of the time but he also needs to get over himself,” one Reddit user said.
“I’m really surprised it wasn’t cut in dress if not before then. It’s still amazing to have watched him realize This Is A Bad Idea in real time as he was telling it live on air,” another user noted.
“I like Che and Jost, but their Update feels more like a standup routine than a news segment. Then again, I’m a big Miller/Nealon/MacDonald guy,” another user on Reddit admitted.
Whatever viewers’ thoughts on Che’s recent controversial comments, he’s still a member of the cast of Saturday Night Live. It will be interesting to see if he addresses all the backlash in the next episode.
