Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost: Why It Took Them Over 10 Years to Find Each Other

Sometimes it takes a long time to find “the one,” even if you’re Scarlett Johansson. On the other hand, perhaps being Scarlett Johansson is what makes it harder to find “the one.”

People often say that such-a-celebrity who is named the sexiest man alive or the most beautiful woman in the world would never have trouble finding a mate. In fact, such fame makes it all the harder. Johansson and her fiance Colin Jost met many years ago but only fairly recently became an item.

Johansson has been acting since she was a child, first gaining notoriety in the late 1990s with the likes of Manny & Lo and The Horse Whisperer. Her career only accelerated in the early 21st century with acclaimed roles in Ghost World, Lost in Translation and Match Point. It was in this period that she first hosted Saturday Night Live

According to Bustle, in 2006, Jost was working as a writer on the show. At the time, Johansson was dating fellow actor Josh Hartnett, with whom she had starred in The Black Dahlia, a fictional drama based on a real-life Los Angeles murder case where the victim was severed in two. Jost and Johansson met, but Johansson was taken, and that was that.

Not much is known about Jost’s other relationships, but tabloids followed Johansson incessantly as she dated several fellow actors. After she and Hartnett split in 2006, she took up with Ryan Reynolds, eventually marrying him. Alas, that marriage was short-lived, with the couple divorcing after three years of marriage.

When they split, they released a statement, throwing more than a little shade at the media: “We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.”

Johansson becomes a mom, Jost an on-camera star

Johansson opened up to Parade about marriage between two celebrities being difficult, saying:

“Acting is a very strange world to be co-existing in. It’s very volatile. There’s always going to be the more successful person.”

She settled down with a less famous person, art curator Romain Dauriac, with whom she had a daughter in 2014. They married that year but divorced in 2017.

Meanwhile, Jost had become the head writer at SNL and them became an on-air talent, taking the Weekend Update anchor spot in 2014 after Seth Meyers split for his own late night show.

Johansson and Jost met several more times as Johansson kept coming back to Saturday Night Live, eventually being one of the guests to host at least five times. They were first seen getting close in 2017, seemed to be on-again, off-again, but the couple finally made their red carpet debut in 2018 at the premiere for Avengers: Infinity War

When Johansson met Jost …

History, both in real life and in movies, is filled with couples who meet, don’t hook up immediately for whatever reason, then become inseparable years later. Just ask Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, who in When Harry Met Sally had a will they or won’t they dalliance for ages when seemingly everyone but them knew they were right for each other.

Johansson and Jost made their engagement official in May, just after the premiere of Avengers: Endgame, so Johansson is having a banner year: She starred in the highest grossing movie of all time, finally got her own solo superhero movie with Black Widow coming out in May, and Jost proposed.

At the end of When Harry Met Sally, the leads appear in a documentary about couples, noting it took them more than 12 years to make it official. As it happens, that’s about the time span between when Johansson and Jost first met. Let’s hope they get their happy ending too.
