Scarlett Johansson: ‘It’s About Time’ Angelina Jolie Joins the MCU
There’s no doubt that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to have a hard time topping the success of Avengers: Endgame. But that definitely doesn’t mean that they’re not going to try. As phase 3 wraps with Spider-Man: Far From Home, fans can begin to speculate what’s next for the franchise.
There are some things, however, that we don’t have to wonder about. Rumors about a standalone Black Widow movie are no longer rumors, they’re confirmed. And the franchise, which was once dominated by handsome, successful, leading men, is now welcoming quite a few strong, independent woman.
Marvel announced a few things that fans can expect for Phase 4 at this year’s Comic-Con and they’re already generating a lot of buzz. Fans and stars are reacting to the announcements, but there’s one announcement that has Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson proclaiming, “It’s about time.”
Angelina Jolie has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe
For several months, fans have been waiting to hear the official news that Angelina Jolie would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported in March that the 44-year-old actress/activist was in talks with Marvel to take on the lead role in The Eternals.
Jolie, as well as the rest of the cast of The Eternals, was introduced to the crowd at this year’s Comic-Con. Along with Jolie, Oscar-nominated actress Salma Hayek will be joining the cast of the movie, set to hit theaters November 6, 2020.
Jolie knows what it means to join the MCU and told fans, “I’m so excited to be here! I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, what it means to be in this family. We’ve all read the script and we know what the task is and so we are going to work very, very hard.”
Marvel made several big announcements
Fans at this year’s Comic-Con event did not leave disappointed. In addition to learning that Jolie would be joining the franchise, it was also revealed that a few returning players would have important roles in the franchise moving forward.
Natalie Portman, who played Jane Foster in Thor and Endgame, will return to the franchise playing none other than the God of Thunder in the 2021 film, Thor: Love and Thunder.
In other Thor news, fans learned that actress Tessa Thompson will join Portman in the film, reprising her role as Valkyrie. Marvel just announced that Valkyrie will be the franchise’s first openly LGBTQ character.
Why does Angelina Jolie make such a good fit for the franchise?
For a long time, Marvel movies have featured chiseled male superheroes. If there was any takeaway from this year’s Comic-Con it was that female leads are going to play a prominent role in the franchise moving forward.
Scarlett Johansson who became the first female star to join the franchise when she played Natasha Romanoff in 2010’s Iron Man 2, expressed her excitement about the changes moving forward.
She told E! News, “It’s bananas. I think it’s very exciting. I think it grounds the presence of the MCU in a way. It’s very exciting to see such a diverse group of people. It’s awesome. And it’s about time.”
When it comes to strong, powerful leads in Hollywood, it’s hard to beat Angelina Jolie. Not only has the actress played several powerful women, she is also a powerful woman herself.
There is no role that Jolie takes more serious than that of a mother and champion of human rights. Fans can expect Jolie to meld seamlessly into her new role and become a memorable fixture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
