‘Schitt’s Creek’: Could a Spinoff Be in the Works?

If you’ve yet to become part of the Schitt’s Creek club, what are you waiting for? The Pop comedy, which also airs on Netflix, finished five seasons with a sixth and final season on the way. The material is so good, could there ever be a spin-off featuring one of the Rose socialites?

Ahead of the season 6 premiere, the sitcom’s Twitter account gave fans an early gift with a clip of what’s to come. In the teaser, matriarch Moira’s (Catherine O’Hara) introduction is one solid reason to tune in. “Oh, hello you!” she said. “Won’t you join me for a little stroll through the slice of paradise I like to call… the town where I currently am?”

The Canadian comedy follows a wealthy family, The Roses, whose financial decisions force them into bankruptcy. Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira, Alexis (Annie Murphy), and David (Dan Levy) move to the town of Schitt’s Creek — the small town bought as a joke years prior.

The show, created by the father-son Levy duo, asks the question, “what if the Kardashians lost all their money?” The answer is comical as each family member tries to fit into a place they feel they don’t belong.

Through the course of five seasons of living in the Rosebud Motel, each character learns how to navigate life post-luxury while still maintaining some semblance of their former lives (like through lavish wardrobe).

As the sixth and final season approaches, Dan said fans can expect an “emotional” series finale.

“It’s definitely been cathartic and lovely and sad and all the things that you would hope for.”

The show has multiple award nominations for a few good reasons

The series had a slow-burn in regards to growing a fanbase, but now that it’s all about to end, it’s among the most popular shows out there. Each episode is inclusive with nuanced, self-obsessed characters you can’t help but love.

Schitt’s Creek earned Pop TV nominations for Best Comedy, as well as nominations for all four leading actors in their respective acting categories for the Critic’s Choice Awards.

Previously, the show received Emmy nominations in its fifth season for best contemporary costumes, as well as props for O’Hare’s Moira and Eugene’s Johnny and Dan’s portrayal of David.

Schitt’s Creek may not have won an Emmy (yet), but they’ve accrued plenty of other awards, particularly in the Canadian Awards circuit.

Is there a possibility of a ‘Schitt’s Creek’ spin-off?

Fans aren’t ready to say goodbye to the cast of Schitt’s Creek. Dan recently told Entertainment Weekly season 6 felt like the best note to end on, at least for now.

“Season six felt like a great time to end on a high note with our fans and to give them exactly what they wanted without overstaying our welcome,” he said. “When the dust settles, maybe there’ll be an idea that creeps into my head. I know that everyone is more than willing to come back.”

Murphy has something to say about that. As the youngest Rose, she thinks there’s one cast member who could pull off their own show.

“She’s such a beautiful, wise, old soul trapped in the body of this bizarre, sweet, wonderful creature,” Murphy said of Twyla (Sarah Levy), who helped with a misunderstanding between Alexis and Ted (Dustin Mulligan). Murphy thinks a Schitt’s Creek spin-off, Just Twyla, could be the next logical step to fill the hole in viewers’ hearts once the series ends.

Whether she’s kidding or not, we’re ready for it.

The sixth and final season of Schitt’s Creek returns to Pop TV on January 7, at 9 p.m. ET.
