Scorcese and DiCaprio: Why the Two Make Such a Killer Combo
There are few duos more synonymous with success in Hollywood quite like Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. The award-winning actor and director have teamed up for a handful of noteworthy films. (And have multiple new projects on the horizon.) Here’s what makes Scorsese and DiCaprio such a killer combo.
Leo knows is picky about who he works with
You may have noticed DiCaprio only works with very specific directors these days. That’s because, as his star has grown, DiCaprio has reportedly become more and more selective over who he works with. (Lucky for him, he’s such a phenomenal actor that he can do that.) USA Today once touched on this topic:
DiCaprio has a reputation as one of the most selective actors in the industry, and he doesn’t so much audition for a role as grill a director like a recruit at a job interview.
“I guess you could say I target most of the directors I want to work with,” says DiCaprio, a film buff known for sending scripts unsolicited to directors who he believes could handle the story.
Clearly, this is how he and Scorsese began making such amazing movies together.
Scorsese knows how to get the best out of actors
Whether you’re talking about Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, or one of the many other amazing actors Scorsese has worked with, there’s no denying he knows how to bring out the best in the actors he works with. In 2011, Harper’s Bazaar caught up with many acclaimed artists who had worked with Scorsese, and every single one gushed about him. It’s specifically noted how much Scorsese cares about who he’s working with. Sir Ben Kingsley said:
“You expect a matador, but you meet the poet who wrote about the bullfighter. Marty cares deeply about fellow humans. If there’s a crisis in your life, he’ll talk in a responsible, compassionate way.”
In nearly every interview, the actor points out Scorsese has a great laugh.
They have a collaborative process
One of the reasons the DiCaprio/Scorsese duo is so dominant is because they take the time to work on the bare bones of a project before they even start shooting it. With upcoming projects — The Devil in The White City and Killers of the Flower Moon — the duo is taking plenty of time to develop both stories before they start working on them. This attention to detail helps ensure the two continue creating high-quality films — and keeps audiences anxious to see what they come up with next.
