“No, I never know,” the singer and actress added. “I don’t even know if he’s gonna show up,” Gomez said with a shrug.

“That’s just the way he lives,” Fallon said.

Then, Fallon pulled out a picture of the co-stars on the red carpet at the Canne Film Festival showing Murray whispering to Gomez. “Everyone’s like, ‘What is he whispering to Selena?’ ‘What is he saying to her? What is it?’” Fallon said.

Gomez went on to explain what was happening in the picture.

“It wasn’t even — first off, that just looks kind of weird– but he was just saying dumb things,” she said.

“Like, he would just lean in, and he’d be like, ‘You look great tonight.’ And then he’d look back serious, he’d be like, ‘Where are you from?’ And I would just, like, sit there and I’m trying to, you know, be poised,” she added.

Apparently, that’s typical Murray behavior. “It’s fine that’s what he did all the time,” Gomez told Fallon. “In press conferences, he would, like, try to hit me with things.”

The behavior doesn’t bother Gomez, it’s just the actor being himself. “He’s fun. He’s a big kid,” she added.

After the whisper heard ‘round the world, Vanity Fair asked Murray what he said to his costar to which he replied, “I don’t remember what I said. I was trying to keep her at ease.”

Bill Murray thought he wouldn’t like Selena Gomez

During the New York City premiere of The Dead Don’t Die, Murray revealed that he initially thought he wouldn’t like Gomez upon meeting her.

“I learned that I like her,” Murray said of Gomez. “I learned that whatever preconception I had about someone that had 55 million, billion followers of something — maybe, I probably thought she was different than she turned out to be.”
