This might seem random to some, but Selenators will know that Gomez has been friends with the star of The Secret Life of the American Teenager for years. The two met in 2008 at a Disney charity event. Secret Life aired on the Disney-owned ABC Family, and Selena Gomez was also starring on a Disney show at the time: Wizards of Waverly Place.
“Six years ago Disney and ABC Family had the stars of their shows go to the Children’s Hospital,” Raisa told Latina.com. “Selena and I were in the same group and we just clicked.”
In an Instagram post that Raisa put up on Gomez’s birthday last year, she said that she is incredibly grateful for the friendship they have built since then.
“I am obsessed with every memory we’ve built in the last 8 years and the ones we have yet to create,” Raisa told Gomez. “I am so grateful that God put you in my life when he did.”
I went through heartbreak this year and you left the studio and drove out of your way to come see me and comfort me. I received good news last month and you facetimed me minutes before you went up on stage just to congratulate me. There are so many moments we have and things you do that I cherish and don't take for granted. Wether its crying, laughing, or simply sitting on my kitchen floor throwing our hands up in the air confused at life, I'm thankful you're always there. I am obsessed with every memory we've built in the last 8 years and the ones we have yet to create. I am so grateful that God put you in my life when he did. If you think about the time that we met and where we were in our lives when we first hung out, his timing was perfect. It's been so inspiring watching you grow and to grow with you. I learn so much from you and I'm so so so proud of you. Happy Birthday Hermana. Love you so so so much @selenagomez
In that Instagram post, Raisa noted that she went through heartbreak in 2016 but Gomez left the studio and drove to see and comfort her. On another occasion, Raisa received good news, and so Gomez FaceTimed her just minutes before she was about to go on stage at a concert.
“There are so many moments we have and things you do that I cherish and don’t take for granted,” Raisa said. “Wether its crying, laughing, or simply sitting on my kitchen floor throwing our hands up in the air confused at life, I’m thankful you’re always there.”
Francia and Gomez are so close that they call each other sister.
“I love her to death. She’s my sister and she is one of the sweetest girls I know,” Raisa said in 2012 after explaining that the breakup between Gomez and Justin Bieber was very healthy. “She is so caring and so loving and so nurturing. She’s awesome. I don’t know where she came from.”
In 2013, Raisa celebrated Gomez’s 21st birthday along with about a dozen of Gomez’s friends including Ashley Benson. She said at the time, “My lil sis is finally 21!”
In addition to having both grown up on television, they also have a love of dance in common, and in 2013, Gomez posted a YouTube video of herself dancing with a few friends including Raisa. She later took it down, but it has been reuploaded here.
At one point, Gomez actually asked Raisa to come on tour with her and perform as a dancer, but that couldn’t happen because Raisa was filming The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Raisa did say in 2011 that she’d be taking time during her summer break to come visit Gomez on tour, but it would just be to see her friend and not to perform.
Although Raisa is the older one, she says that she has learned a lot from Gomez, particularly when it comes to the music industry.
“She just tells me it’s a whole different world, and it really is,” Raisa said. “It’s a whole different ballgame, and you really have to have the appetite for it.”
I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. Luckily for Gomez, her blood type was compatible with that of Raisa. Gomez said on Instagram today that “there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
