The Special Meaning Why Selena Gomez Released ‘Look At Her Now’ 24-Hours After ‘Lose You to Love Me’
It’s only been a day since Selena Gomez dropped her latest single, “Lose You to Love Me.” But, it appears the singer has already released another song, titled “Look At Her Now.” The surprise track is an upbeat bop and accompanied by a colorful music video. This starkly contrasts the emotional ballad and black-and-white video for “Lost You to Love Me.” And although “Look At Her Now” is a special treat for longtime fans, Gomez’s intention behind the quick release is much more meaningful than it may seem.
Selena Gomez drops ‘Look At Her Now’ on Oct. 24
Gomez officially released “Look At Her Now” at midnight on Oct. 24. The singer-songwriter made the official announcement on Instagram while simultaneously dropping the track and music video on their respective outlets.
“And here’s my special gift to all of my ride or dies,” Gomez wrote on Instagram.
It also seems Gomez’s “Look At Her Now” music video was shot entirely with an iPhone. As reported by Billboard, the “Lose You to Love Me” video was also filmed on an Apple device — specifically the new iPhone 11 Pro.
“I created this with Apple especially for you,” Gomez continued.
The singer then took the time to thank her fans. “Y’all have been through it all with me and I thank you for pushing me to be the best,” she wrote.
Selena Gomez on the meaning behind ‘Look At Her Now’ release date
Meanwhile, as the music video dropped on YouTube, Gomez hinted at the meaning behind “Look At Her Now.”
“I was so excited to release two songs back to back and surprise my fans,” Gomez commented on the video. “It’s a reminder that you can rise no matter what challenges life brings.”
Then in a press release courtesy of Rolling Stone, Gomez revealed why she chose to release “Look At Her Now” a day after “Lose You to Love Me.” And it seems “Look At Her Now” — co-written by Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, and Ian Kirkpatrick — is a companion to “Lose You to Love Me,” as the latest track’s lyrics allude to the recovery from a bad relationship detailed in the latter.
“I felt having these two songs released back to back completed the story of how one can rise no matter what challenges life brings,” Gomez said. “Turning off the noise and living your life on your terms.”
Fans react to the meaning of the ‘Look At Her Now’ release
Given Gomez’s public relationship — and breakup — with Justin Beiber, it’s no surprise fans speculate both tracks are about the “Sorry” singer. Nevertheless, it’s clear Gomez is solely focused on her journey “on the up from the way down.” And of course, most fans seemed to pick up on Gomez’s intention when releasing the two singles back-to-back.
“Lose You to Love Me and Look At Her Now show Selena’s journey and how she is truly content and happy with where she is now,” one fan wrote on Twitter. “Her world was black and white and now it is full of color. I’m so proud of her.”
“Selena Gomez releasing a sad ballad about moving on from a long relationship to releasing a song about being happier than before the next night. Legendary,” another fan tweeted.
Gomez’s choice to release “Look At Her Now” immediately after “Lose You to Love Me” is powerful. It seamlessly highlights the transition people often feel post-breakup as well as the journey of self-love and moving forward. And no matter how you look at it, “Look At Her Now” proves Gomez isn’t just surviving, she is truly living.
